Under UTMA, you owned that account as of the date of creation, and your original basis in that account is the value of your inheritance at the time.A UTMA account is typically like any other investment account; the account custodian over the years will have been making investments on your behalf and you should have been filing tax returns reporting interest, dividends, and capital gains and losses from that account over the years - which you may not have known.
