What are the generally expected things to do/questions during a 4-wheeler (car) driving licence (DL) test at Jayanagar RTO, Bangalore?
I got my LL and then DL from Jayanagar RTO on my own!Step 1 Lerners License (LL)Day 1: Went to Jayanagar RTO looking for an agent. He quoted Rs 3500. Although i know how to drive both 4 wheeler and 2 wheeler. Thought language might be a barrier as i am not too affluent in Kannada. Saw big sign boards all around the RTO office which i thought asked us to stay away from touts. Changed my mind. Came back home, went through posts from couple of our friends answers in Quora.Total time spent in RTO 30 minutes.Documents Required for LL:Form 2 with photo - for new learners licences you will have to apply online. Below is the URL. Before you fill the form make sure you have the neccessary docuements lited below. https://sarathi.nic.in:8443/UF/p... . When you fill the form for Form Type select LL and select MCWG for 2 wheeler and LMV for 4 wheeler.Permanent Address and DOB (i gave Passport)Current address - I gave rent agreement. Not required if you have a permanent address proof for bangalore.Proof of owner - Landline BSNL Bill (I guess you electricity bill will also work) Not required if you have a permanent address proof for bangalore.3-4 passport size photosStaple the above list of documents in the same order. Except Form 2 supporting documents should be photo copiesDay2: With all the documents listed above went to RTO.Went straight to the payment counter. After you enter take a left go straight towards the DL section. The counter in the front is not for DL. (It took me 15 minutes to figure that out)At the counter show your form. Pay fees for LL (MCWG and LMV). It was around Rs 50 for each type, dont remember the exact amount but I guess I paid around Rs150.After payment go to the ARTO room. He will validate your documents. Keep Photocopy of documents in the same order as mentioned above. Take orginal for all of them he may ask for that. For me he did not care .After ARTO signs go to the next room where the tests are conducted. ARTO will decide if you have to take a written or an oral test.As soon as you enter the guy sitting there will make an entry in his register. If written you will be asked to sit in one room if oral you will be asked to go to the second room.I got a written one. 15 questions mutliple type 10 being the passing marks. I got eactly 10 :)If you pass, the guy will keep your documents and will ask you to come after a week to get the LL between 4-5. No recipt, no acknowledgment. If you flunk dont worry you can come again after a week. Most probably the ARTO will give you an Oral test the next time. I would suggest be prepared the first time and read before you come for the exam.Total time spent in RTO 3 hours. Go early at around 10 because they only accept 250 people in one day for LL test. and the ARTO sits only till 12.30 p.mDay3: Went there after 10 days at around 4.15 p.m. and got 2 LLs. 1 for 4 wheeler and other for 2 Wheeler.Total time spent in RTO 15 minutes.…………Step 1 complete……….Step 2.... Permanent License.. and this where the fun beginsDocuments Required for Permanent DLApply online for a permanent DL through https://sarathi.nic.in:8443/UF/p... and select DL as form type.Fill up the form, take a print out. This will be your Form 4.At the entrance of RTO from the reception ask for form 8 (dont remember the number) this will for addition of vehicale type.Envolope with Rs 15 stamp. I bought it from a guy sitting outside the entrance for Rs 30. Write your address and phone number clearly on the envolope.Day4: Go to the payment counter show your form and he will take around Rs.251.(again dont remember the exact amount)Then go to the ARTO to get your documents signed like you did for LL. I went there on Monday and was asked to come on Wednesday again with original. I had the original but the guy was not interested to have a look at that. So went back…Total time spent in RTO 1 hour.Day5: (Went to ARTO again to get my documents signed.)Once the document are signed from ARTO. Get your photo clicked. You will see a long line for this and you will know where to go... :) (took 1 hours to figure this process out)Next to the room where the photos are clicked is data entry area. check there who is going to validate your data. I was asked to wait for 5 minutes and then they called me to verify my data in their system. After that he stamped on my form.”Data Verified” :PThen go to the inward section next to the payment counter. The guy sitting in the middle will do an entry of your vehiceles RC. I think it was counter no 3.Make sure you take your 4 and 2 wheelers RC, Insurance and Pollution original documents.Test is conducted in parking area of RTO office for people who come directly and are not through driving school.I saw couple of people through agent giving their test..There driving test was to give left\right indicator, Drive for 10 meters and reverse back, open the tunk, validate the Engine number with RC number. And since i was without an agent i was asked to drive out of the parking (alone) drive for around couple of kilometers come back to the parking and had to do a reverse which was so surprising for the parking attended that he came running and said this is one way and you are going the wrong way. I told him that this is what the inspector has asked to do as test. He smiled and left :PThen for 2 wheeler was a simple test.. had to do one round of parking lot.The grilling did not end there. Then i had to give an oral test for around 10-15 minutes. Finally, the inspector kept my papers and told me that i would have to remove the reverse horn of my car and deposit it with her, after which i would get my papers. :)I get so frustrated that i just took the horn out and gave it to her. and thats how i passed the driving test :)Got my papers signed and went to the guy sitting in the room next to where the written test was conducted. He checked my papers and kept it.Again no acknowledgment, no recipt ... finally got my DL delivered after 3 weeks.Total time spent in RTO 4 hours.Problems that i faced.... No one will tell you where to go next. If they are kind enough to tell you, 90% percent of the time they will direct you to the wrong counter. It used to take me around an hour just to understand the next counter. But there were couple of people who did helped me and I am thankful to them. Not all hope is lost....I could have get it done from an agent it was never about the Rs 3500 he quoted, could have afforded it easily. But the feeling you get when you beat the crap out of corrupt officials .... priceless... :)

How do I fill out a W-4 form?
The main thing you need to put on your W-4 besides your name, address and social security number is whether you are married or single and the number of exemptions you wish to take to lower the amount of money with held for taxes from your paycheck. The number of exemptions refers to how many people you support, i. e. children. Say you are single and have 3 children, you can put down 4 exemptions, 1 for your self and 1 for each child. This means you will have more pay to take home because you aren’t having it with held from your paycheck. If you are single and have no children, you can either take 1 or 0 exemptions. If you make decent money, take 0 deductions, if you are barely making it you could probably take 1 exemption. Just realize that if you take exemptions, and not enough money is taken out of your check to pay your taxes, you will be liable for it come April 15th.If you are married and have no children and you make decent money, take 0 deductions. If you have children, only one spouse should take them as exemptions and it should be the one who makes the most money. For example, say your spouse is the major bread winner and you have 2 children, your spouse could take 4 exemptions (one for each member of the family) and then you would take 0 exemptions.Usually, it’s best to err on the side of caution and take the smaller amount of deductions so that you won’t owe a lot of money come tax time. If you’ve had too much with held it will come back to you as a refund.

Why did my employer give me a W-9 Form to fill out instead of a W-4 Form?
I wrote about the independent-contractor-vs-employee issue last year, see http://nctaxpro.wordpress.com/20...Broadly speaking, you are an employee when someone else - AKA the employer - has control over when and where you work and the processes by which you perform the work that you do for that individual. A DJ or bartender under some circumstances, I suppose, might qualify as an independent contractor at a restaurant, but the waitstaff, bus help, hosts, kitchen aides, etc. almost certainly would not. There's always risk in confronting an employer when faced with a situation like yours - my experience is that most employers know full well that they are violating the law when they treat employees as independent contractors, and for that reason they don't tolerate questions about that policy very well - so you definitely should tread cautiously if you want to keep this position. Nonetheless, I think you owe it to yourself to ask whether or not the restaurant intends to withhold federal taxes from your checks - if for no other reason than you don't want to get caught short when it comes to filing your own return, even if you don't intend to challenge the policy.

How should I fill out my w-2 or w-4 form?
To calculate how much you should withhold you need to calculate two things. Step 1 - Estimate your TaxFirst go to Intuit's TaxCaster (Link -> TurboTax® TaxCaster, Free Tax Calculator, Free Tax Refund Estimator) and put in your family's information and income (estimate what you'll make in 2016 before taxes and put zero for federal and state taxes withheld, don't worry that the TaxCaster is for 2015, you're just trying to get a general number). Once you enter in your correct information it will tell you what you would owe to the federal government.Step 2 - Estimate your Tax Withholding Based on Allowances ClaimedSecond go to Paycheck City (Link -> Salary Paycheck Calculator | Payroll Calculator | Paycheck City) select the correct state, enter in your pay information. Select married filing jointly then try putting in 3 or 4 for withholdings. Once you calculate it will tell you how much taxes are being withheld. Set the pay frequency to annual instead of bi-monthly or bi-weekly since you need a total number for the year. Try changing the Federal withholding allowance until you have enough Federal taxes withheld to cover the amount calculated in the TaxCaster. The Federal withholding allowance number that covers all taxes owed should be the number claimed on your W-4.Don't worry too much about your state. If you claim the same as Federal what will usually happen is you might get a small refund for Federal and owe a small amount for State. I usually end up getting a Federal refund for ~$100 and owing state for just over $100. In the end I net owing state $20-40.Remember, the more details you can put into the TaxCaster and Paycheck City the more accurate your tax estimate will be.

How much do accountants charge for helping you fill out a W-4 form?
A W-4 is a very simple form to instruct your employer to withhold the proper tax. It's written in very plain English and is fairly easy to follow. I honestly do not know of a CPA that will do one of these. If you're having trouble and cannot find a tutorial you like on line see if you can schedule a probing meeting. It should take an accounting student about 10 minutes to walk you through. There is even a worksheet on the back.If you have mitigating factors such as complex investments, partnership income, lies or garnishments, talk to your CPA about those, and then ask their advice regarding the W4 in the context of those issues.
