It just means that the way you have challenged yourself throughout your four years of high school is often regarded as a greater indication of your academic preparedness than your score on a standardized exam. Most likely you will fill out the PROFILE forms and then you will check to see if you are eligible (with your parents) to fill out the FAFSA forms to apply for student aid from the US government (PROFILE is used for student aid from a Private university).The other problem you may encounter is having your guidance counselor submit your official transcript (in English) to the colleges along with a cover letter of recommendation. If your school is not used to students applying to US universities, then you will need to start Early to get them on the same “application wavelength” as you will have to be for the US universities.Start early. Indeed you do it in the same way all Europeans do.Your Italian citizenship automatically makes you an EU citizen, which means that you have to apply in the same way all Europeans do.You will need a translated copy of your high school transcript, which has to be recognized in Europe. You're going to have to choose here.A few notes1) being a contributor to magazines and having your work in print is probably going to be more important than an award, especially if you can make commissions which means you can say something along the lines of "I am an entrepreneur / have a small business / etc" depending on the signNow of your work.2) Creating an organization, especially if you can sustain it for all four years of high school and grow it into something larger is more important than an award. Both 1 and 2 are admissions essay stories. Winning an award is resume filler. To get into an elite school you need a killer admissions essay story, not a resume full of bullet points.3) Don't learn to play the recorder to win an award. Learn to play the recorder because you enjoy playing the recorder. Unless you're looking to go much further with it and get scholarships / play music in college, no admissions officer is going to care about an award for recorder. If you don't enjoy playing for its own sake, drop this activity.4) Don't take engineering courses form edx or coursera for the ultimate purpose of winning a science award. Take courses because you find them interesting or they will fill holes in your high school education. Also consider courses that will provide you concrete skills instead of abstract knowledge, such as coding. Additionally, consider taking courses through a local community college or 4-year college instead. Frequently high schools offer programs that allow their students to take college classes free of charge, so ask your guidance councilor ASAP about these options or how you can get into a course. I took several college level courses in high school, and I wish I had taken more. edx and coursera are great, but a transcript with good grades in college level courses is going to speak louder on your application and be more useful to you as you can form relationships with actual professors, meet older students, and learn about college life early.5) lab internships are good if you can get them. The  more work you can do in your intended field before college the better. another alternative is a pre-college program where you can take college courses for high school students. If you can afford it, look into this option at your choice college. You will live on campus, take classes with professors, make connections at the university, meet other high level students, get college credit for your work, and get an intro into a field you are thinking about to really start deciding if its what you want. Pre College was the most valuable thing I did in high school.Coding an app isn't bad but at your age meeting people in your intended field through classes and internships is going to be more valuable than coding alone in your room... especially since most projects like that never get finished. At the absolute minimum you can get a transcript from a class or a recommendation letter from an internship boss / professor.6) lacrosse is a good option also if you plan on going for a sports scholarship in college. If you're not good enough at the sport for a scholarship or do not want to make sports part of your college experience, it is not necessary, especially if you are already fencing. You may need to decide between fencing and lacrosse if you want to do a sport no matter what. Keep in mind training for your sport may limit your summer internship/class options and extracurricular course options.7) volunteering is usually good on an application, but you'll probably need to keep your hours to a minimum to fit in everything else. A wolf sanctuary is cool, especially if you can somehow mix photography into it. However its not relevant to anything else, and you can already have a good application story with your photography or lab internship, so you should seriously consider cutting it.finally 8) Don't forget that you still need to keep your high school grades up during all this, and that you need a social life. The two most important skills to gain are going to be time management and socialization. If you can manage your time well and pick your activities wisely so that you excel in all of them and still have time to play, you'll adapt well to the college experience. If you can learn to socialize, you'll be able to take advantage of all the networking experiences (and friends!) college has to offer. If you don't schedule in time for fun, play, and socialization, you'll burn out and perform poorly.You also need to gain experience in friendship and romantic relationships as early as possible so that you have time to learn how to keep and maintain friends, how to recognize toxic relationships, learn to communicate when there are fights + how to prevent fights, collaborate, have a support network, and more. Stakes are low in high school -- you might never see anyone from your high school again once you leave, but the social skills you learn there and memories you make are for life, even if the friendships fade.In summation:~It looks like for your big things, you're going to want to pick 2: sports, photography, or extra-curricular academics. ~DON'T DO THINGS "FOR AWARDS"~consider your application essay: what's your "story?" rather than bullet points and lists of Things You Did~Gain SKILLS~Learn to socialize and manage your time

Departments of education and school districts always have to make decisions about what to include in their curriculum.  There are a lot of life skills that people need that aren't taught in school.  The question is should those skills be taught in schools?I teach high school, so I'll talk about that.  The typical high school curriculum is supposed to give students a broad-based education that prepares them to be citizens in a democracy and to be able to think critically.  For a democracy to work, we need educated, discerning citizens with the ability to make good decisions based on evidence and objective thought.  In theory, people who are well informed about history, culture, science, mathematics, etc., and are capable of critical, unbiased thinking, will have the tools to participate in a democracy and make good decisions for themselves and for society at large.  In addition to that, they should be learning how to be learners, how to do effective, basic research, and collaborate with other people.  If that happens, figuring out how to do procedural tasks in real life should not provide much of a challenge.  We can't possibly teach every necessary life skill people need, but we can help students become better at knowing how to acquire the skills they need.  Should we teach them how to change a tire when they can easily consult a book or search the internet to find step by step instructions for that?  Should we teach them how to balance a check book or teach them how to think mathematically and make sense of problems so that the simple task of balancing a check book (which requires simple arithmetic and the ability to enter numbers and words in columns and rows in obvious ways) is easy for them to figure out.  If we teach them to be good at critical thinking and have some problem solving skills they will be able to apply those overarching skills to all sorts of every day tasks that shouldn't be difficult for someone with decent cognitive ability  to figure out.  It's analogous to asking why a culinary school didn't teach its students the steps and ingredients to a specific recipe.  The school taught them about more general food preparation and food science skills so that they can figure out how to make a lot of specific recipes without much trouble.  They're also able to create their own recipes.So, do we want citizens with very specific skill sets that they need to get through day to day life or do we want citizens with critical thinking, problem solving, and other overarching cognitive skills that will allow them to easily acquire ANY simple, procedural skill they may come to need at any point in their lives?

Your school does that for you. The transcript contains your grades (final or semester/quarterly depending on your school), your GPA, and high school courses you've taken, which is important if you took some classes in middle school or during the summer.
