Today it’s easy. The Democrat Party showed their true colors when they fixed the primary election for Hillary Clinton. They do not respect the will of the voter. They only want power. Democrats used to be for the people. It’s hard to argue you are for the people when you do not respect how they vote. Not only don’t they respect the American people choosing Trump as their president (I can somewhat understand that), they don’t even respect their own voters. The DNC primary is a perfect example of this.Democrats have done a 180 on too many issues to be considered to be for any issue or platform. In 1996 Congress overwhelmingly voted to build a barrier between the US and Mexico. Most democrats voted for the barrier including Obama, Schumer, and Clinton. Now that Trump is in office, all three have flip flopped. Democrats used to be for secure borders - not anymore.Democrats used to say that if the deplorable would not accept the presidential results, their refusal would show who they really were. The election happened, but the deplorable did not accept the results. Only thing is…The Democrats were the ones who showed their true colors!Democrats used to be for the First Amendment. During the Vietnam War, they won many court cases based on the First Amendment. The candidate with the most votes wins. We only use the (often corrupted) Electoral College system for Presidential elections. Various federal officials have been trying to revoke the Electoral College system for almost 200 years!To register to vote in Texas, any person 18 years of age or over, with no record of felonies or outstanding warrants, may fill out a voter certificate application and send it (Email, U.S. Mail or hand-delivered if you wish) to the County Clerk’s office. Applications for a Voting Certificate may be obtained at any Post Office, public library, state or county official site, or just download an application off-line at the address of your county clerk’s office.In many areas you may even fill out the certificate online and enter it. Be sure y ou have a legitimate state driver’s license or, better, a social security card number. I can't necessarily speak for Democratic party leaders, but many Democrats view voter ID laws pushed by Republicans as done in bad faith. If Republicans were in good faith about wanting to ensure that all voters are properly identified, they wouldn't be doing things like (1) shutting down DMVs in areas where people are most likely to need IDs, (2) associating voter ID with hot button cultural issues (e.g., how Texas allows concealed carry ID as a voter ID but not a college student ID), (3) opposing "motor voter" initiatives that allow people to get automatically registered to vote when they get their driver's license, (4) failing to subsidize or reduce fees for people making a good faith effort to get their own IDs, or (5) completely ignoring other more likely sources of voter fraud that favor Republicans (e.g., absentee ballots). For this reason, I can understand why some Democrats would advocacy of voter ID drives as lending legitimacy to Republicans acting in bad faith with ulterior undemocratic motives. The question is intimately connected to a different but related question: should the state require universal ID cards for its citizens. Lots of countries do and typically those countries also expect citizens to show their ID when they vote. However, mandatory ID cards have been regarded with distrust in the English speaking countries. Neither the UK, Australia nor the USA have mandatory ID cards and those countries don’t require formal ID as such to vote (except now in some US states).The sate requiring a formal ID to vote is a step down the path to mandatory ID.On to the pragmatic question. What problem are voter ID laws trying to solve? The stated problem is voter fraud. Voter fraud does occur in the US but voter ID only deals with a specific kind of voter fraud: in-person voter fraud. It is hard to get exact numbers but actual confirmed cases of in-person voter fraud are very rare. Confirmed voter fraud is more common (but still relatively rare) with absentee ballots and event then usually on local elections. More common is electoral registration fraud - but in this case it isn’t people voting but people employed to help register people using fake names as a financial con. Media hype about dead people voting is typically examples of poor electoral records rather than electoral fraud.So voter ID laws will not prevent many (if any) cases of voter fraud. However, they can add barriers to people who want to vote. How steep that barrier is depends on the voter ID law itself. If the ID is easy to obtain and low-cost or free then it isn’t going to be much of a barrier to people voting. Not all voter ID laws are of that kind which is why some have fallen foul of constitutional objections.The USA has had a long sad history of attempting to place obstacles in the way of people voting. Those obstacles have been aimed at poor people in general in some cases but more often at black Americans in particular. The effort put into voter ID laws by politicians who have a vested interest in discouraging black people from voting, compared against the tiny number of actual cases of in-person voter fraud speaks for itself.
