Adapting Stephen King’s novella to the silver screen, Frank Darabont took some liberties with the story which deeply change its message. The fact that King himself supposedly “liked” the changes is irrelevant: King is not the same man he was when he wrote the story in 1980. Blessing Darabont’s changes is a way to retell his own story and retcon it.The mist is a disaster caused by careless military experimentation, which punctures a hole into another dimension, one full of monstrous life. King’s original had already killed the murderer of Ms Carmody, though probably without moralising intention, as he was a “third wheel” and totally expendable by the point he died.Second, to dispel public mistrust in the government, the Good Old US Army kicks in, killing all ultra-dimensional monsters using rifles, mortar, flamethrowers, tanks and whatnot. Yes! The Great Good Old US Army can clean the mess it makes! Just wait and have faith!Because the main character didn’t have faith he killed his lover and his child.
