Good for him, however, he had been bitten by a werewolf and begins to display heightened senses, which help him find about his wife’s infidelity and about the shady tactics used by his successor to steal his position. He trumps over his enemy and lives to become a truer Wolf than DiCaprio’s character.Propaganda here teaches us that aggressive businessmen are virtuous (wolf-like). We should act as predators, dominating over our neighbours like a wild beast over its pack. The spirit of capitalism.Another ingenious example of propaganda is found in this film. Adapting Stephen King’s novella to the silver screen, Frank Darabont took some liberties with the story which deeply change its message. The fact that King himself supposedly “liked” the changes is irrelevant: King is not the same man he was when he wrote the story in 1980. Blessing Darabont’s changes is a way to retell his own story and retcon it.The mist is a disaster caused by careless military experimentation, which punctures a hole into another dimension, one full of monstrous life. As the creatures attack a small town and devour its inhabitants, a group of them finds shelter at a grocery store.The original novella satirised irrational reactions by religious people, embodies in Ms Carmody, who begins an apocalyptic cult based on biblical prophecies. As she creates a congregation and becomes hysterical, some characters try to escape the supermarket into a SUV, planning to drive away from town before the monsters invade. One of them kills Ms Carmody, breaking up the congregation, and they leave, though one of them, Ollie Weeks, is killed by a monster.There are two problems with this plot, from the point of view of state propaganda. One: it makes people believe that military research can bring about destructive consequences into people’s lives. Two: it makes people think that religion is not good. The government doesn’t want people demanding shutdown of research facilities or cutting down of military expenses. Those who control the government (religious psignNowers) don’t want religion to be shown as an obsolete thing.So they ‘fixed’ the story in two ways:First, instead of stopping the narrative as the car drives gently into the night (a scene from the original novel that reminded me of Dylan Thomas and left a deep impression on me, one that King’s works rarely cause), Darabont wrote an epilogue in which the main character decides to kill his new-found lover and his only child to spare them from the suffering at the hands of the monsters. He plans to kill himself later, but…This fix punished the lead character for his “lack of faith” in the religious psignNower, his mockery of prophecies and his mistrust of the government’s ability to solve the problem it caused. King’s original had already killed the murderer of Ms Carmody, though probably without moralising intention, as he was a “third wheel” and totally expendable by the point he died.Second, to dispel public mistrust in the government, the Good Old US Army kicks in, killing all ultra-dimensional monsters using rifles, mortar, flamethrowers, tanks and whatnot. Yes! The Great Good Old US Army can clean the mess it makes! Just wait and have faith!Because the main character didn’t have faith he killed his lover and his child.
