America’s oldest Major League Baseball park, constructed in 1912, Fenway is a great place to watch a game, or just take in the surroundings. The Fens is a really nice part of the city, and it’s near the edge of it, so if you live or are staying in a nearby suburb, you can get home fairly easily (if you beat the crowd, that is). There are lots of good pubs around there, too. Speaking of pubs……The pub scene. Boston isn’t a huge club city (or maybe I’m just not cool), but its strong Irish heritage gives it stellar pubs where you can watch sports, play pool, or just enjoy good beer.The North End. This is Boston’s Little Italy (yes, we have one too, New York). It is a world all its own, with old brick buildings and narrow streets, not to mention heavenly Italian food. I recommend Pizzeria Regina, a local chain now, but that’s the original one from the 1920s.The collegiate opportunities. Boston has……more colleges than I’ll list here. I think BU, BC, Harvard and MIT are pretty world famous though (yes, the latter two are in Cambridge, but close enough). All that Irish history gives a great show in the form of the parade in South Boston, and a night out that night is just epic.The Worst:The cost of living. Rent prices in Boston and its neighborhoods are just crazy. It might be worth it in downtown, where you do get a lot of bang for your buck (if you have a lot of buck), but unfortunately it’s out of control for everyone else. Rent control seemingly doesn’t exist in Boston, and landlords charge sometimes $800/month or more, utilities not included for a total shithole. Personal example, I lived in Somerville in an apartment with two other people, and we all paid $600 each. The heat bill was like, half of that alone, and we had rats in the apartment. Yeah, not worth it. It’s been theorized that due to Boston being a huge college town, tons of students rent apartments off campus, and landlords take advantage, because they know a lot of them are young, from out of town, and don’t care. Those of us from the area are not given a break, I’m afraid. You just really don’t get what you pay for.The drivers. People from Boston and eastern Massachusetts in general have a well-deserved reputation for being awful at driving. While I’m not sure our skills are necessarily lacking, we are pretty damn impatient and it shows. If you’re not careful, you’re turn into one.The weather. OK, disclaimer; I’m actually used to the weather in New England and don’t mind winter, I actually kinda like it. And no one ever said the weather here was nice. But objectively speaking, there’s a reason so many of our elderly move down to Florida or the Carolinas, and so many others move to CA. The relentless snowstorms combined with periods of bitter cold might have something to do with it. In Boston and the surrounding area, it’s winter from Christmas time until late March, sometimes April. I remember February of ‘15- it was literally just a blizzard. However, that’s not all. When winter finally gives it a rest, we get rain and wind, along with temperatures that range from 45–90 degrees. Really. I’ve felt it. Then, it’s just ball soup for about three months- hot occasionally, but so, so humid. Fall is actually nice, go then.The city and state’s hatred of alcohol and fun in general. Remember I mentioned how fun our pubs can be? Well they can, just make sure you have an ironclad ID, cross your fingers if it’s out-of-state, and don’t expect any happy hour- it’s illegal. And there’s no more late night train service, so have fun getting home. You know what, just go to a house party, it’s better.Speaking of the train, the T is awful. Just really bad. The Blue Line is OK, but all the others either break, fill with smoke, freeze, or get delayed by at least 20 minutes. I’m told they’re fixing this problem- building new trains- but for now we all have to live with the high blood pressure.Dont want to turn you off, though. I’d take Boston over New York any day!
