A storage location for hEvalth-care waste should be designated inside the hEvalth-care establishment or research facility. The waste, in bags or containers, should be stored in a separate area, room, or building of a size appropriate to the quantities of waste produced and the frequency of collection.

Once collection occurs then biomedical waste is stored in a proper place. Segregated wastes of different categories need to be collected in identifiable containers. The duration of storage should not exceed for 8-10 hrs in big hospitals (more than 250 bedded) and 24 hrs in nursing homes.

(b) Storage of biomedical waste in a place other than at the generating facility shall not exceed 30 days. The 30-day storage period shall begin on the day the waste is collected from the generator.

A. All biomedical waste management records, including any documentation provided by the transporter, shall be maintained for 3 years and be available for inspection.
