Legally you can’t. Those withholdings are not yours. They are payments towards your tax liability, made at the time that you earn the income. Pay as you go. It makes sense.So what you want to do is borrow money that isn’t really yours, interest free, invest it for a few months, and then pay it back the next year. Is that correct? While it’s not really permitted you can manage to get away with it. You can’t easily get away with stopping all withholding. That requires stating that you expect to pay zero taxes for the year, which you know is false. It looks suspicious and is easy for the feds to check. Instead, what you can do is reduce your withholding by claiming a large number of exemptions. That’s not nearly as suspicious. When you complete your return you’ll owe a lot of tax, which is clearly against the rules, but you’ll probably get away with it at least for a year or two and maybe longer depending on how lax the IRS is in enforcing the law on scamsters like yourself.I used to claim a large number of exemptions. It was legitimate since I actually had a lot of deductions at that time. But a couple of years I accidentally withheld too little money, more than a couple of thousand dollars. I paid the tax with my return and adjusted my withholding going forward and the IRS didn’t penalize me or question it afterwards. But if you’re talking about under withholding by a lot more than that and year after year then good luck. You might get caught, forced to pay a penalty and interest, and be flagged for special attention in the future.

Since you have banned the prisons, someone convicted of say, manslaughter in a car accident where he was not negligent but someone died, would be sent to “Africa” to be housed in a hole in the ground (because you don’t care about his well-being, that’s why you sent him there; beaten or whipped as the whim of the non-American guards because there is no standard for punishment; worked to death in slave labor camps; starved and forced to eat garbage and bugs; and if he survives whatever sentence is meted out, he is then no longer a US citizen. In fact, he is stateless. So where is he released? What country does the criminal slink off to to spend the rest of his broken-bones, scurvy-infected, tuberculin days, short though they may be? How would that work?And while he is in this shithole prison (because of course, you’re contracting on the cheap), how do his loved ones communicate with him? How do they visit? Can they visit? Or is your plan just to get rid of as many Darkies as possible, since “they commit all the crimes”?If you’re so intent on protecting society and locking up the “bad guy” and throwing away the key then you should join the increasingly popular for-profit prison system run almost exclusively by the Republicans. In that astonishing scheme the owners of the prison only maximize their profits when the prisons are overcrowded. They therefore contract with the judiciary to find as many people as guilty as possible and mete out long sentences regardless of the crimes. That way they can build ever larger prisons with more beds and provide less medical care and cheaper, less nutritious food while they warehouse the prisoners for perpetuity and make a profit. It’s happening today. Republican judges have already been convicted of working with for-profit prisons to incarcerate any infraction. They corrupt the police so that the cops get the trouble-makers they don’t like off the streets, regardless of guilt and innocence, and then start them on a life of incarceration. It’s an industry.But it’s still better than your plan of outsourcing torture, disenfranchisement and misery for shoplifters, misdemeanor thieves and even the innocent who have been caught up in your web. After awhile I would imagine the US would be nearly empty of anyone.And that doesn’t even take into account the Constitutional provisions against “cruel and unusual punishment” but in a world where Republicans think waterboarding is neither cruel nor unusual, I guess that would work. As Henry Kissinger once said, “The illegal we can do right now. The un-Constitutional may take a little longer.”

It can take years and years of living an upright life, before people will renew the sense of trust they had before you got sent away.As you know, that is one of the biggest reasons why the great majority of ex-cons end up back in the slammer. They can’t get a job; so what else is there to do, to have money to live on? You go take it from someone or somewhere, and then you get caught, and then …Your best bet is to find a job with a government office or a social services agency. Even a part-time job, because there the hiring restrictions are not so strong.Or you might hunt up a job with a small tradesman. A roofer. An insulation or ceiling contractor. A plumber or sewer cleaner. A body shop. A landscaper. Any sort of place where you do other people’s dirty work for them. Small businesses like that almost always need guys who are willing to work hard and not bitch. And they don’t ask very many questions, and they don’t often turn up their noses because of what you used to do.After you get on your feet, you might consider going into business for yourself. Doing the same sort of thing, the kinds of jobs that are not very popular or prestigious, but which are necessary and where there is always work, in good times and in bad. When someone has a flooded basement, they don’t inquire into your criminal record if you have the tools and the skills to get the drains working again.It might be nicer to get a job in a bank, where you could wear a suit and tie every day, and sit in a comfortable chair in an air-conditioned office. That is rather unlikely, I’m afraid.There is work for you. I’m sorry to say, but your best opportunities are for the jobs that most other people don’t want to do. The really good jobs, those with high pay and indoor work and no heavy lifting, are pretty much reserved for the goody-goods, who don’t have a record. We could have some discussion about how fair that is, but it wouldn’t get us anywhere. You need a job, and you have to look where the best opportunities are.
