This is a serious, potentially career-ending act.Steps 4–6 can, in some jurisdictions, be done over the phone, e.g. “telephonically.” In those cases, the judge instructs the officer to sign the judge’s name on the search warrant. I’ve done a couple of these where I was pretty sure the judge was asleep during large portions of my statement of probable cause. When these are done telephonically, the call is usually recorded and later transcribed for the record.The officer is then free to serve the search warrant.
