Departments of education and school districts always have to make decisions about what to include in their curriculum.  There are a lot of life skills that people need that aren't taught in school.  The question is should those skills be taught in schools?I teach high school, so I'll talk about that.  The typical high school curriculum is supposed to give students a broad-based education that prepares them to be citizens in a democracy and to be able to think critically.  For a democracy to work, we need educated, discerning citizens with the ability to make good decisions based on evidence and objective thought.  In theory, people who are well informed about history, culture, science, mathematics, etc., and are capable of critical, unbiased thinking, will have the tools to participate in a democracy and make good decisions for themselves and for society at large.  In addition to that, they should be learning how to be learners, how to do effective, basic research, and collaborate with other people.  If that happens, figuring out how to do procedural tasks in real life should not provide much of a challenge.  We can't possibly teach every necessary life skill people need, but we can help students become better at knowing how to acquire the skills they need.  Should we teach them how to change a tire when they can easily consult a book or search the internet to find step by step instructions for that?  Should we teach them how to balance a check book or teach them how to think mathematically and make sense of problems so that the simple task of balancing a check book (which requires simple arithmetic and the ability to enter numbers and words in columns and rows in obvious ways) is easy for them to figure out.  If we teach them to be good at critical thinking and have some problem solving skills they will be able to apply those overarching skills to all sorts of every day tasks that shouldn't be difficult for someone with decent cognitive ability  to figure out.  It's analogous to asking why a culinary school didn't teach its students the steps and ingredients to a specific recipe.  The school taught them about more general food preparation and food science skills so that they can figure out how to make a lot of specific recipes without much trouble.  They're also able to create their own recipes.So, do we want citizens with very specific skill sets that they need to get through day to day life or do we want citizens with critical thinking, problem solving, and other overarching cognitive skills that will allow them to easily acquire ANY simple, procedural skill they may come to need at any point in their lives?

Take a 10-30 minutes walk every day. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day. Sleep for 7 hours. Live with the 3 E’s — Energy, Enthusiasm, and Empathy. Play more games. Read more books than you did the previous year. Spend time with people over the age of 70 & under the age of 6. Dream more while you are awake. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants. Drink plenty of water. Smile and laugh more. Don’t waste your precious energy or time on gossip. Forget issues of the past. They’ll just ruin your present happiness. Don’t have negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment. Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone, so don’t even try. Don’t take yourself so seriously. You don’t have to win every argument. Just agree to disagree. Make peace with your past so it won’t spoil the present. Don’t compare your life to others’. You have no idea what their journey is all about. Don’t compare your partner with others either. What other people think of you is none of your business. No one is in charge of your happiness except you. However good or bad a situation is, it will change. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch. Get rid of anything that isn’t useful, beautiful or joyful. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up. Call your family often. Your inner most is always happy. So be happy. Each day give something good to others.

Okay. Grab a long-term food supply, a jar or container to store urine, a couple gallons of water, and a bag full of clothes, because man, have I got a story to tell.So way back (actually like one year ago) in eighth grade, our school was having some bullying issues. Honestly, it wasn’t even that bad, but I feel like a bunch of parents must have blown it way out of proportion. So our school decided to have an assembly. (yaaay!)They hired this dude that was probably getting paid minimum wage, and trapped us in the auditorium for an hour and a half. This….this….atrocity of a person was wearing a neon wig. We were off to a bad start. They talked about hurting others feelings, and “muting” the bullies. Honestly, they tried to help, but actually all our school did was make it worse. Keep in mind, we were like, fourteen, and the dude was speaking to us like we were Kindergarteners.Honestly, it was probably the cringiest thing I’ve ever witnessed.So it all took a turn for the worst when the person asked for volunteer speakers. He asked the assembly what anti-bullying advice they’d like to share, and calls up two people.Now, the first guy goes up to the microphone, and shakily says something lame. Okay, that’s what I would do if I were in his shoes.But then, the second one goes up to the microphone….….And starts hurling obscenities at the speaker. Yeah, If I told you the stuff he said, it would sound like freaking Morse code.Beep beep beepbeep beep beep beepbeep beepbeep beepbeepbeep…. You get the idea.Yeah, a bunch of teachers had to remove him from the auditorium, and I think he got in a ton of trouble.The speaker was a bit-okay, very much- shaken up, and did a horrible job after that. Since I grew up in America, my answer is going to be centered on American school lunches.I think that they can be improved in two ways: Being more nutritionally dense, and having children be more involved with the school lunch process.A lot of current American school lunches while being filling, lack vital nutrients, and are instead very sodium laden.“A 2008 analysis of school lunches by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) concluded that American kids consume very few fruits and vegetables in their cafeterias—with potatoes accounting for a third of all vegetables consumed. IOM also found that kids were eating many refined grains and too much saturated fat and sodium. “How to Improve American School LunchesI would say this is a pretty accurate representation of a good to excellent American school lunch.Here's how school lunch in the US stacks up against what's served in the rest of the worldFrom my honest recollection, usually what would be served up regularly was square (never, circular, or triangular, mind you, this is very important, I can not emphasize this enough), square pizza. Some type of “different dish”, and chicken nuggets. Well actually, my memory is starting to fail me now, so I will link to what the current menu this month for my old elementary school is.Not too bad, but there could be room for improvement, a lot of pizza, chicken nuggets, which is all well and good, but these, these ghastly things.Okay, I am aware this is kind of a weird video, but it is an authentic representation of what I, and many other kids, ate in middle school and high school.Now, recently, I saw a video on the school lunch system “Kyushoku” in Japan.I thought the differences in nutrition were staggering. The Japanese lunch had rice, vegetables, and even fresh fish, which are very nutritionally dense.In addition, many of the ingredients are fresh, and students are more involved in the process of making the school lunch.8th grade students visiting a domestic farm where their school orders some of their produce from. For their work experience, they are separating edamame for tomorrow’s kyushoku.Which brings me to my next point; I believe we can improve American school lunches by having the children be more involved in the process of making their own lunches.Here, the students all take turns serving each other lunch. I think this is a very respectful and polite thing to do for others.In addition, these students are also required to clean up after themselves, and tidy up the area after they are done eating. I think this is a great lesson in discipline, responsibility, but also Home Economics. Learning how to properly clean a kitchen or living area is an often overlooked, yet fundamental skill that kids should learn early on.Another thing I appreciate is how varied the school lunches are. This school tries not to offer the same dish twice in a month. Although, kids being kids, often would request their favorites over and over again, in this case being curry. I don’t know if all schools in Japan offer such a diversity in options, but I think this is also a beneficial gift to the students in developing their taste palates, and helping to keep their bodies strong and healthy.The importance placed on school lunches comes from the view that school lunches are a part of the curriculum themselves."Japan's standpoint is that school lunches are a part of education," Masahiro Oji, a government director of school health education, told the Washington Post in 2013, "not a break from it."Japan's mouthwatering school lunch program is a model for the rest of the worldI can’t help agree, because eating healthy helps increase your learning skills, as well as mood. With the school covering staff and kitchen costs, and parents covering ingredients. If the parents are low-income and cannot afford the everyday costs, they must apply for social welfare meal plans at the school. The child will still receive the exact same meals as other kids. The screenshots from the previous video is actually of an average public school, not an exceptionally rich one either. In fact, this school is in the poorest of Tokyo’s wards.From this, we can assume the lunches shown above are of the bare minimum requirements for a proper kyushoku, as more well-to-do families often have more time and money to spend on improving their children’s schooling experiences.All-in-all, without spending more money, we can still improve our school lunches in America bya) Including more fresh, domestically grown produce and poultry into every meal.b) Including our students more in the lunchtime process, from farm to lunch table.What’s also ironic is that the Kyushoku system got official after 1946, when G.H.Q recommended systematic health education, and the school lunch program in Japanese schools.The Japanese government took note, and starting providing school lunch to 250,000 children in the Tokyo metropolitan area. This later expanded to all over Japan.Much funding at the time came from relief aid provided by foreign governments and charities. When Japan later regained full independence in 1951, the funding stopped. The Minister of Finance wanted to get terminate school lunch subsidies. However, this was strongly opposed by many people in Japan, and in 1954, school lunch law was enacted, with school lunch being a part of the school curriculum.So I think it’s very cool that Japan once took America’s advice and greatly improved their school lunches. There are two ways I thought about this.(1) The 37 year old is handicapped in some way that the parent is assisting them by checking the paperwork, but the parent also was helping them be independent by filling it out themselves to begin with So, no problem.OR(2) The adult child is welcoming the parent to do this for them. There is actually nothing wrong with either. I’ve done this for some of my adult children when forms are long with lots of steps. I’m that second pair of eyes to see if they’ve missed anything (home and auto loans especially). Again, no problem.BUTIf the parent is interjecting themselves into a situation that the adult child did not want them involved in, then that’s a problem. That is overbearing. But I wonder why the adult child is letting the parents anywhere near the paperwork if they didn’t want them to be involved. That adult child needs to go to the bank or wherever the situation occurred alone. That adult child needs to be independent and state it, loud and clear. If that adult child is living at home, perhaps it’s time to move out. That adult child is not signaling their adulthood and independence and some parents will continue to treat them like children. No fun for anyone.
