Hi,Towards the front of your Immigration Form there is a check list. I'm assuming you mean a tourist visa for my answer:It's pretty simple. All the information you need is on the US embassy's website. (U.S. Embassy & Consulates in South Africa)I'm Namibian with temporary South African Residence and I got a visa relatively hassle-free last year in Cape Town.You need to fill out a form online and make the visa payment online to secure an appointment at the consulate. You will receive very clear correspondence on the documentation you need to provide- this will be things like proof of residence in South Africa, proof of occupation/study etc. All of this just to make sure that you're intending to return here and not become an illegal alien in the States.The appointment entails handing over all your documents and a brief interview where they will ask you 2 or 3 simple questions like why you want to go to the US, when you're going and for how long etc. They're generally quite pleasant and easy-going.After this they take your passport and mail it back to you within 5 days with the VISA inside it. You will know whether you've been granted a visa when you leave the consulate. From what I've heard your chances of being denied one are quite slim. The tourist visa spans 10 years so you're pretty much sorted for a decade. Obviously you can't go for 10 years at a time, but you can go on multiple trips within that timespan with the same visa.All in all, it's one of the easiest visas I've ever had to obtain. The US embassy is efficient and much less stringent than any European ones.

Trust me, I lived it, you are probably being scammed. I was selected for a summer internship 2016.I tried to be very open while filling the preference form: I choose many products as my favorite products and I said I'm open about the team I want to join.I even was very open in the  location and start date to get host matching interviews (I negotiated the start date in the interview until both me and my host were happy.) You could ask your recruiter to review your form (there are very cool and could help you a lot since they have a bigger experience).Do a search on the potential team.Before the interviews,  try to find smart question that you are going to ask for the potential host (do a search on the team  to find nice and deep questions to impress your host). Prepare well your resume.You are very likely not going to get algorithm/data structure questions like in the first round. It's going to be just some friendly chat if you are lucky. If your potential team is working on something like machine learning, expect that  they are going to ask you questions about machine learning, courses related to machine learning you have and relevant experience (projects, internship). Of course you have to study that before the interview. Take as long time as you need if you feel rusty. It takes some time to get ready for the host matching (it's less than the technical interview)  but it's worth it of course.

While I do not know for sure, certain things can be inferred. However--as I said--things were looser then. Student visa holders weren’t closely tracked until SEVIS was introduced after 9/11. Prior to 1997 there was no real penalty for overstaying one’s visa. Musk, as a student visa holder, would have been admitted to the USA for “duration of status” to study at Stanford—meaning that there was no clear expiration date and no real way to enforce the requirement that he leave the country after withdrawing from Stanford. I’m skeptical of the claim that others have made that he had trouble getting a US driver’s license, as two days (at Stanford) would have been long enough to apply for a driver’s license and a US social security number. As I said—these things weren’t checked all that closely in the 1990’s. Plus he’d studied at another US school pre Stanford giving him more time to establish himself in the US. Musk’s brother Kimbal—OTOH—who never studied in the US might have had a bit more trouble getting a driver’s license and US social security number during this phase.So—yes—Musk was probably technically out of status for a period of time following his Stanford withdrawal but there were few if any consequences to this at the time. Once Zip2 was funded in 1996 by VC’s, the VC’s would likely have both offered to—and insisted upon—helping get his immigration status on a firmer footing. VC’s—even in the looser 1990’s—wouldn’t have wanted to fund a company with founders in a questionable status. So since he got his green card by 1997, we can infer that he got his green card in about a year (from 1996 to 1997).That’s actually fairly fast for a green card, which implies that he got his green card by a fairly fast mechanism. Two fairly fast mechanisms are the so called “national interest waiver” and the “alien of extraordinary ability” route. I’m guessing he didn’t go the “alien of extraordinary ability” route. Although Musk has certainly done extraordinary things after getting his green card, his track record before getting his green card doesn’t seem strong enough to warrant an extraordinary ability claim. So I think he probably went the “national interest waiver” route which allows one to bypass the first step in the green card process—allowing for a faster green card—by claiming it is in the US “national interest” to do so. The final stage in the green card process would have been faster too because he could have done it at a US consulate in Canada as a Canadian citizen.So—although I do not know for sure—I’m guessing he followed roughly the following steps: he obtained a student visa to study at Stanford. He then fell out of status—but with few consequences given the environment that existed in the 1990’s—for awhile after withdrawing from Stanford. Once Zip2 was funded, he was sponsored for a work visa (TN or H-1B) and was assisted in filing for a green card via the national interest waiver. The national interest waiver petition was successful, and he completed the green card processing at a US consulate in Canada in 1997. Five years later, he went through the usual process to apply for US citizenship by naturalization on the strength of his five years of US permanent residency.
