I have played piano nearly my entire life. Today I am very proficient in sight reading but as a child it was one of my weaker aspects a musician. I produced a video on this subject:So how did I change this? It really came to me in an “Aha!” moment. My father, Morton Estrin was set to perform the Tchaikovsky B-flat minor piano concerto at Carnegie hall and he needed to play the concerto with someone playing the orchestra part at the second piano. He handed me the score – which if you’ve ever seen, is a very thick book. I told him I couldn’t read it and I would end up missing half the notes. I opened up the score to face a swarm of black notes splattered all over the pages; it was going to be a challenge for sure. I realized immediately that if I looked away from the page I would definitely get lost. So I decided to put my fingers at the starting keys and simply play what I could but never look away from the score. I counted like crazy staying with the party as best I could. We went through the entire concerto, all three movements, and I never got lost! Although I missed tons of notes, to my surprise it didn’t seem to matter. All my father needed was to run the concerto and that we did. I learned something incredibly valuable that day. Keeping your eyes on the music and keeping the music flowing in time is critical to your sightreading success. But even more important is playing with other musicians and sight reading with them is essential for developing your reading. It will greatly improve your sightreading capabilities to perform as a group. Sure, you can practice every day by yourself (and you should) but it’s not until you actually start playing with other musicians that you will be forced to keep the music flowing.

You are missing a few components, principally a robot do do the actual building, a computer to house and generate the blueprints and a some kind of building robot surveyor to grade the results.To run an Evolutionary algorithm you need a replicator (the robot) copying with modification (the computer) and selection (the surveyor).Initially the computer would generate say 1000 random assemblies of your building materials which would then be assembled by the robot.The surveyor would choose the 100 which were most house like giving a points score for things like having a ‘roof’ (even if it is only 3 inches off the ground) and give bonus points for having larger internal spaces, ‘windows’ ‘doors’ and other house like features and deducting points for being too large or expensive.The computer would take the 100 best designs and generate 10 variations of each them making random alterations and adding elements from other designs. Those 1000 offspring would be built by the robot and scored again. This process would repeat until the fitness score from the surveyor plateaus out (ie they are not getting any better).I’d guesstimate you would need at least 1000 generations to get something useable but it would also be a very strange house as it will exist to exploit the letter of the rules, not the spirit.So you may find the walls are all glass because the bonus points for having windows was too high or not properly capped, the buildings will probably be circular to enclose the most space for the least cost and all the windows would be in the roof to let in the most light.
