For taxes, does one have to fill out a federal IRS form and a state IRS form?
No, taxes are handled separately between state and federal governments in the United States. The IRS (Internal Revenue Service) is a federal, not state agency. You will be required to fill out the the necessary tax documentation for your federal income annually and submit them to the IRS by April 15th of that year. You can receive extensions for this; but you have to apply for those extensions. As far as state taxes go, 41 states require you to fill out an income tax return annually. They can either mail you those forms or they be downloaded from online. They are also available for free at various locations around the state.Nine states have no tax on personal income, so there is no need to fill out a state tax return unless you are a business owner.Reference:www.irs.gov

How could the federal government and state governments make it easier to fill out tax returns?
Individuals who don't own businesses spend tens of billions of dollars each year (in fees and time) filing taxes. Most of this is unnecessary. The government already has most of the information it asks us to provide. It knows what are wages are, how much interest we earn, and so on. It should provide the information it has on the right line of an electronic tax return it provides us or our accountant. Think about VISA. VISA doesn't send you a blank piece of paper each month, and ask you to list all your purchases, add them up and then penalize you if you get the wrong number. It sends you a statement with everything it knows on it. We are one of the only countries in the world that makes filing so hard. Many companies send you a tentative tax return, which you can adjust. Others have withholding at the source, so the average citizen doesn't file anything.California adopted a form of the above -- it was called ReadyReturn. 98%+ of those who tried it loved it. But the program was bitterly opposed by Intuit, makers of Turbo Tax. They went so far as to contribute $1 million to a PAC that made an independent expenditure for one candidate running for statewide office. The program was also opposed by Rush Limbaugh and Grover Norquist. The stated reason was that the government would cheat taxpayers. I believe the real reason is that they want tax filing to be painful, since they believe that acts as a constraint on government programs.

Why don't schools teach children about taxes and bills and things that they will definitely need to know as adults to get by in life?
Departments of education and school districts always have to make decisions about what to include in their curriculum. There are a lot of life skills that people need that aren't taught in school. The question is should those skills be taught in schools?I teach high school, so I'll talk about that. The typical high school curriculum is supposed to give students a broad-based education that prepares them to be citizens in a democracy and to be able to think critically. For a democracy to work, we need educated, discerning citizens with the ability to make good decisions based on evidence and objective thought. In theory, people who are well informed about history, culture, science, mathematics, etc., and are capable of critical, unbiased thinking, will have the tools to participate in a democracy and make good decisions for themselves and for society at large. In addition to that, they should be learning how to be learners, how to do effective, basic research, and collaborate with other people. If that happens, figuring out how to do procedural tasks in real life should not provide much of a challenge. We can't possibly teach every necessary life skill people need, but we can help students become better at knowing how to acquire the skills they need. Should we teach them how to change a tire when they can easily consult a book or search the internet to find step by step instructions for that? Should we teach them how to balance a check book or teach them how to think mathematically and make sense of problems so that the simple task of balancing a check book (which requires simple arithmetic and the ability to enter numbers and words in columns and rows in obvious ways) is easy for them to figure out. If we teach them to be good at critical thinking and have some problem solving skills they will be able to apply those overarching skills to all sorts of every day tasks that shouldn't be difficult for someone with decent cognitive ability to figure out. It's analogous to asking why a culinary school didn't teach its students the steps and ingredients to a specific recipe. The school taught them about more general food preparation and food science skills so that they can figure out how to make a lot of specific recipes without much trouble. They're also able to create their own recipes. So, do we want citizens with very specific skill sets that they need to get through day to day life or do we want citizens with critical thinking, problem solving, and other overarching cognitive skills that will allow them to easily acquire ANY simple, procedural skill they may come to need at any point in their lives?

I haven't filled the tax forms for 2011, 2012, and 2013 and Glacier Tax Preparation only allows me to do so for 2014. I entered the USA in 2011. How can I file those now?
I don't think you can file taxes for 2011 and 2012 this year. But as you did not have any income in those two years. It is fine even if you dont file taxes.Study how to file taxes, how to determine residency status and which forms you should submit when you are in F1 VisaF1(CPT, OPT), J1, M1 Visa tax returns filing : All information IRS wants you to know - Grad Schools BlogThough I am not expert in tax laws, I figured this from my case and few other friends.

I am currently an independent contractor, based out in california and shelling out more than 50% of my income as federal, state taxes and other statuatory deductions. What are best ways to save tax and how can I do it?
A2A - Well CA has a 13.3% tax for those with income over a Million. The Federal rate is 39.6%. for 52.9% so I guess I need to congratulate you on your success.Seriously, since your a sole proprietor I doubt very seriously that you are in a 50%+ tax bracket. How are you arriving at those percentages. As to deduction you need to keep track of everything that is business related. However, the starting point is how are you arriving at that percentage because I feel strongly that you are doing something wrong in you perception of this tax rate.

I am being made redundant and my employer want me to help them fill out tax forms after I leave, can I charge them a consultancy fee for this?
You are not obligated to do work for an employer after your last date of employment. Generally, if you are asked to do work for them after you leave, you should:determine if you are interested since this will impact time you can give to a job searchbe polite however you answer because being asked to do additional work for them does reflect well on your work with themhave some idea of what you would do the work for. Unless you have access to medical or other lost benefits, you would typically expect to be paid somewhat more than you were paid in salary (because you now have to provide your own benefits). ask them to make you an offer and put it in writing including what the responsibilities will be, the dates they anticipate you will be needed, will you have to work through a contract provider, etc. Be sure this documentation includes how and on what timing you will be paid (do you have to invoice them, etc.) Once you are doing this job, work hard specifically on your responsibilities. If they ask for additional types of work, remind them politely of what your documentation requested, but indicate you'll be glad to do it as long as a change in documentation is promptly done (and you should take responsibility to make sure that happens). So, bottom line, negotiate the fee or payment and complete all the documentation before you do the work, so that everythi is clear to you and your former employer. Thanks for the A2A.
