You can go to any Catholic Church anywhere! Just walk in the door. There are 3 in my area. One I don't like because it's too modern, can't relate to the priests' homilies. The next one I love with it's stain glass windows, lighting candles section, just is comfortable....the priests are awesome and everybody volunteers for something. I did Habitat for Humanity and packed boxes for Christmas and delivered them to folks who were in need.  The other church is way downtown, and is the original Mission church built way back when churches were being established. I go sometimes. Small church, original benches, old statues. beautiful and historic.Find the one you like, feel comfortable going to....and just GO!

This pretty well sums up my opinion of David Hogg. He has been coached, coddled and cosseted by Michael Bloomberg and has capitalized on his celebrity as the survivor of a tragedy that was allowed to happen through ineptitude and failures of the Broward County school board, the administration of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the sheer incompetence and cowardice of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office and a failure to properly route information by the FBI.Sheriff Scott Israel was removed from office by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in part because of the failure to properly respond to the incident.But David Hogg and his coterie of schoolmates gave a free pass to the sheriff’s office, Deputy Scot Petersen and everybody else in order to focus blame a Smith & Wesson rifle and a small business that had done nothing wrong at all. The business, Sunrise Tactical, was forced to close its doors after the shooting.It is highly ironic that a person supposedly damaged for life because of the actions of a person who passed a background check is such a strong proponent of them. The shooter was able to pass the background check in spite of the fact he had a long history of interactions with law enforcement due to his violent behavior. He had no criminal background, no record because he was never prosecuted for his offenses. That’s because of the policies of the Broward County school district and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.This is not NRA propaganda. These were among the findings of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Commission created by the state of Florida in response to the incident. The commission released its preliminary report in January of this year.On to my opinion of polls and the people that participate in them.Last week, NPR (National Public Radio) and the PBS Newshour conducted a Marist poll of 880 adults. The poll was conducted from February 5th through 11th.The poll showed that 82% of adults believed that background checks would make a difference. Just 15% said they would make no difference. 68% of self-identified gun owners were in favor of background checks but 30% said they would make no difference. The poll also found that 60% of respondents favored a ban on “assault weapons” and 64% favored creation of a national gun registry. 65% also believed a ban on high-capacity magazines would make a difference.The last question in the survey was, “From what you have read or heard, do you think, compared to 25 years ago, the per capita gun murder rate in the U.S. is higher, lower, or about the same?”In an odd coincidence, 82% of those surveyed believed that the gun murder rate had remained the same (23%) and the majority (59%) believing it was higher. Only 12% believed the rate had gone down.The latest data we have is from 2017. the 25-year period that includes both beginning and ending years starts in 1993. According to data complied by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the gun murder rate fell by more than 36% from 1993 to 2017.So 82% of respondents had no idea what they were talking about. That’s not surprising; they have been fed a stream of distortions and lies by politicians and media and by celebrities who don’t know what they’re talking about, either.Political party didn’t seem to matter except in the percentage of ill-informed people. Only 8% of Democrats and 9% of Republicans were aware of the truth. I am almost embarrassed to say that gun owners did no better than the average of the respondents.David Hogg’s comment is interesting. I am not afraid of a background check, I have gone through far more of them than he has, especially considering that he can’t even legally purchase a gun since Florida raised the minimum age to 21.But the background check law currently being rammed through the House isn’t about buying a gun. It’s about transferring a firearm, which is a whole different ball of wax.The federal government considers anything that shifts the physical possession of a firearm from one person to another, even temporarily, to be a transfer. If I hand my wife a gun for her to look at, that’s a transfer. When she hands it back, that’s another transfer.The bill currently being marked up does exempt me and my wife handing guns back and forth. I can even give her a gun to keep. I can do the same for my children.I can also let a friend use one of my guns at a shooting range or while hunting. But, if I let him keep the gun after the trip to clean it as a favor to me, that’s a felony, even though he is going to return it the next day.As a sop to the NRA and gun rights advocates, the bill specifically prohibits national gun registration. In the first place, that’s stupid. Establishment of a federal registry of guns or gun owners has been illegal since 1986. So this bill does what? Makes something that’s already illegal “illegaler?” In the second place, it makes the law impossible to enforce.If the government doesn’t know who owns what guns, how is it going to monitor the transfers of those guns? How is it going to make a case for prosecution? Why wouldn’t a police chief or county sheriff figure that they have better uses for their resources than chasing down cases they can’t prove. Are we going to have sting operations to catch Mr. Jones selling his old hunting rifle to his next-door neighbor? What if Mr. Jones and his neighbor said that it was actually sold before the law went into effect?Noted gun control advocate Garen Wintemute did a study of three states that enacted universal background check laws, Colorado, Delaware and Washington state. Only Delaware had a signNow increase in the volume of background check inquiries. The volumes in Colorado and Washington remained essentially flat. The homicide rates in all three states rose in the years after the laws went into effect. Wintemute concluded that the laws were ineffective because people ignored them and, in some cases, county sheriffs weren’t enforcing them.Moreover, results from other states with universal background checks are mixed. Illinois and Maryland, both of which require checks on every sale outside of immediate family, consistently report some of the highest homicide rates in the nation. Washington, D.C. is at the top or near the top every year.The thing is that I am not afraid of a background check: I am concerned about what will happen when they continue to prove to be worthless.

That misses the point. Most of the time there isn’t an available line to join, and that is definitely the situation of the Dreamers.Unfortunately DACA doesn’t change the illegal status of the Dreamers. It merely postpones deportation and allows temporary work during that postponement.At this point it becomes a highly charged political issue even more so than it already was. The best case scenario for the Dreamers is that Congress will act favorably on their status, converting it to a legal status with a path to a green card and eventual citizenship. Due to the fact that most Dreamers are in a politically sympathetic situation—they may be here illegally but the original illegal act was through no fault of their own—and 2018 is a midterm election year, there is a chance that Congress will act. Their current deferred status will expire right in the middle of an election campaign and Congress may fear the consequences of not acting. The worst case scenario is that their status will expire and they will be back where they started with no work permission.

I was working as a Census taker for Statistics Canada during the national census of 1996 when one member of the public made a false complaint against me.To give the necessary background: Each census taker was assigned a different territory. We were each provided a detailed map of our own territory, clearly marking out its boundaries. Every residence within that territory was depicted on the map as a little square or rectangle. And for each street within our territory, it listed the relevant range of house numbers for each side of that street (e.g. one territory might end at numbers 49 and 50 Random Street, the next territory started across the intersection at numbers 51 and 52 Random Street.) If everyone got together in a huge field, they could potentially piece together a cool, giant detailed map of Canada.A big part of our job was physically delivering a census form to every separate lot within our territory with a residence on it. If the map showed a lot with a newly built home as empty, a form still needed to be delivered to that residence, and then we needed to mark the missing residence on the map of our territory. The maps were extremely accurate, and I had to mark maybe one new home on mine.The census was meant to be a snapshot of Canada on a particular day. If someone owned multiple residences, they needed to fill out the form for each property with information for that residence as of census day. So if the entire family stayed in one house on that date, the information for their second house would be that it didn’t have any residents as of census day — there was no need to fill out any of the additional data on that form. If someone’s son spent that date in the spare house? Then the form would reflect that the second home had one resident as of that date, and that son’s data would need to be entered on that form.People didn’t have to fill out the forms on the spot, but could mail it in (at no cost) by the deadline, some date following the “census date”. If they had any questions about filling out the form, I could try to answer their questions while I was at their door, or they could call the help line provided on the form itself.There was a different, and longer, census form for farms. It collected some agricultural data as well as data about the residence and its inhabitants. If someone groaned about having to fill out the longer form, I’d point out that they only needed to provide estimates for most of the extra questions (statistically, if someone slightly overestimated one figure, someone else would balance that out by underestimating). I’d also point out they could probably get all the information they required from their last income tax form. If someone hadn’t kept their income tax form and was concerned about providing any inconsistent data? I told them not to worry, because Revenue Canada is not allowed to see their census form, Stats Can is not allowed to see their income tax form (which is why they don’t just take the data from that), the data is all aggregated and, again, Estimates Are OK.This groaning was far from universal — strangely enough, I had to talk some people who had a hobby garden in their backyards out of trying to claim the longer agricultural form to fill out — but I quickly became used to having some people act reluctant about accepting the longer agricultural form.So, on with the story at hand: During one of my trips I came to one farm with clearly only one entrance to the residence, from a road well within my territory, to a home well within my territory. With agricultural form in hand, I knocked on the door and it was answered by a woman. I explained I was here to drop off a form for the census. She looked at the form then told me she will not fill it out. No explanation. She just said she would not fill it out.This wasn’t entirely unusual or unexpected (although up to that point I faced zero resistance — only, in a couple of cases, some antsy migrant workers hurriedly running off to hide in barns.Some people think they aren’t required to respond to the census and consider it to be the government being too “big brother”. So I politely explained to the woman that all the information she provides will be kept private, and won’t be shared with any other government authorities. I was about to explain there are benefits to the census, e.g., ensuring that the appropriate level of health services, police services, etc, are provided to different areas. But before I could, she again said “There is no requirement for me to fill out the form.”So I read to her from a paper we were provided politely explaining that a census form is required to be filled out by every residence in Canada.Then she says she was already given a form. I asked if someone came up to this property? (Because that would mean another census taker erroneously came into my territory). No.Finally, she explained that she had received special permission from someone in the government to not fill out the agricultural form. Taken aback, I asked her where she got that advice from, and she said she had spoken to someone from the census office, and she was told that she wouldn’t be required to fill out a form for this address because they already had a form for another part of their farm operating out of the neighbouring territory.So, I thought to myself “why the hell didn’t you tell me this to begin with instead of wasting everyone’s time?”, but instead I said to her something like “Okay, I was completely unaware of that. How about I leave a form with you, and you give my supervisor a call at this number. Then if you don’t need to complete the form, just throw it out. He can also let me know if I don’t need to get a form back from you.” She seemed very agreeable to this. So I apologized for taking up her time, and headed off.This was in the days before everyone had mobile phones. So instead of driving home, calling my supervisor, finding my way back to where I had left off (which wasn’t at a convenient intersection), and getting back to the job at hand, I decided to continue going door-to-door and following up the next morning.The next day, before I could call my supervisor, he called me.He was a former highschool principal whom I had the pleasure of working with on other contract jobs with the government (Elections Canada, specifically), so he knew me fairly well. He said to me “Hey, I got a complaint from a woman. Don’t worry about it. I know you, and I think this is completely out of character, but she complained that you were very rude and aggressive. She said you threatened to call in the police and get her fined if she didn’t take a form from you, and other things that strike me as very unlikely.” So I told him my side of the story. He said, “You did the right thing. We verified that part of her farm operation is in the next territory, she’s already received a form for it there, and Stats Can doesn’t need her to fill out a second form. The other operation doesn’t have a separate residence, so she can fill that data in on the one form. I told her she can dispose of the form you left with her, and we’ll follow up on her complaint. As far as I’m concerned, that’s the end of that. Keep up the good work.”

Zero…. no matter how poor you are. Therefore, it is Essential that your parents fill out those forms. You MUST have your parents fill out the forms, unless you are 24 years old or older, a member of the US military or honorably discharged, or legally married. However, if you are married, then your spouse must fill out the forms with you.The total cost (TC) of the college is the tuition, mandatory fees, room, board, books and supplies and some miscellaneous expenses.Your need for financial aid is TC - EFC. You can Not negotiate on the EFC. It is what the college perceives it to be. Therefore, be very careful and honest in filling out the FAFSA and PROFILE forms. If you are considered an US applicant then you must (generally) submit your latest Federal Tax forms (for your parents and for you) to the college. If you or your parents own a “small business”, be prepared to be GRILLED for extra information as almost every college believes families Hide money in a small business. I have known families that had to produce evidence that the family was not Hiding money in younger siblings bank accounts or investment accounts. Be prepared for a Lot of forms.If you are an international applicant, then you may Not fill out the FAFSA forms. And the PROFILE or other forms that you and all your parents fill-out must be verified by an independent agency in your country that is trusted by the college. Small business owners could be haunted even more if international.Once the level of financial aid is determined, the US applicants are Expected to take a Federal Pell Grant. And even if the college says otherwise, they will structure your “aid” to almost force an US applicant to take a Federal Direct Loan (they have their ways….)All colleges expect the student to Earn money each Summer (including the Summer before you start college). Period. Many colleges also expect the student to earn some money during the academic year (one way to “force the US student” to take a Federal Direct loan).If you get financial aid from a college, then Expect to graduate with some amount of student loans. That is because you must apply for financial aid Each year, and “surprise, surprise”, I have seen Increase the EFC for rising juniors and seniors…….. (therefore reducing the amount of college money provided to you as a grant).Given that a Private US college can cost as much as $300,000 for four years, most students need to apply for financial aid.Some colleges will award some Merit Scholarship money to excellent students, however the elite Private US colleges (for the most part) do Not award any merit scholarships.Athletic scholarships are a whole different story.Enjoy the process.All the best.
