A good question.One of the popular scientific myths is that energy is a physical thing in the same way that matter and light are. It is not. In both cases, there is nothing wrong with figurative talk, so long as we realise that that's what it is. It is only when we mistakenly think that it is intended to be taken literally that problems and misunderstandings arise.UPDATE: Finally, I should emphasize that the fact that energy is a defined quantity, does not mean that perpetual motion is possible, or that there is no such thing as an energy crisis, or that we can solve the energy crisis simply by defining new forms of energy into existence. As regards what we call the energy crisis, the fact is that our industrial society depends on carrying out activities and processes that depend on our having access to certain raw materials and processes (fossil fuels, sunlight, wind, falling water, geothermal heat, nuclear fission, nuclear fusion etc.) and since our current dominant source of such materials/processes are fossil fuels, which are both finite and potentially dangerous in terms of their effects on the environment (global warming and ocean acidification), there is a need to increase the efficiency and decrease the costs of alternative, safer and renewable methods of allowing us to carry out those essential activities and processes. Of course, all of this is much easier to state as “we need to find alternative, safer sources of energy, which aren't going to run out in the not too distant future”.
