Any other angle will most likely set them off. Rage or shutting down completely emotionally, denial, all can be expected regardless of the approach taken.But make sure to point out that it's not like you personally have room to talk it just seems like they have been in a rough spot and been doing alot of shady things lately and your just worried about them is all. Don't want to see them land in jail or hospital or wherever else…Say they haven't looked happy in a long time. Are they happy with how theyre living their life right now? Are they content with how things are going? Are they sure they want to continue on the road their on? If your able offer a helping hand and offer to help them quit if they want to. Either way your there for them to talk to.Concern, caring, worried, upsetting, wanting them to be happy, healthy, etc.If they start lashing out, ease off and just tell them okay nevermind. I was worried, but if you don't want to talk about it that's fine, I'll drop it.That may or may not get them to calm down enough to continue a different conversation.The whole process isn't going to be quick. You may have to try several times before any kind of real progress gets made. If you care enough about them be there for them. Let them know your there. An interesting study in the Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health Alcohol-Induced Blackout adds to Ms. Tiede’s answer on memory and blackouts. The research shows that along with a “failure to save” operation in a blackout, there are also “retrograde memory problems”, difficulties in memory retrieval (there are memories but the brain is unable to access them).Their appears to be a genetic marker for blackouts. There is speculation that blackouts might predispose a person for alcoholism by limiting memory of an alcohol related episode to just the early stages (where the experience is still one of predominately amusement and positive feelings) and not the later, more problem oriented stage.The lack of memory encoding and difficulties around retrieval also help explain the curious phenomenon of people going into multi-day blackouts and being able to be seen as relatively sober (all alcohol having been metabolized by then).
