How do I get a good sample of people, only from specific cities like Los Angeles, New York, or San Diego, to vote on my online poll or fill out my short survey online?
What about posting in their local Craigslist?
-
In the gun control debate, there seems to be a lot of bad data flying around. If we can't trust people to properly fill out a survey how are we going to address the issues?
It’s truly worse than you think! Read here from John Lott Jr.: Adam Lankford ‘botched’ study claiming U.S. accounts for one-third of mass shootings:A shock 2016 study argued that the U.S. accounted for nearly one-third of all mass shootings, sparking global headlines about the dangers of an American gun culture. Now another researcher says the original study “botched” the data.John R. Lott Jr., president of the Crime Prevention Research Center, crunched the numbers and said his count shows that the U.S. had less than 3 percent of the world’s mass public shootings over a 15-year period.<
>Mr. Lankford, who claimed to be the first to attempt a global survey, said his results suggested there was something to the American psyche that left people disaffected when they failed to achieve the American dream. He said they turn to violent outbursts with firearms.“It may thus be the lofty aspirations and broken dreams of a tiny percentage of America’s students and workers — combined with their mental health problems, distorted perceptions of victimization, delusions of grandeur, and access to firearms — that makes them more likely to commit public mass shootings than people from other cultures,” he postulated in his 2015 paper.Yet he has failed to post the data on all 292 shootings. Early academic critics said it’s easy to find data for U.S. shootings but trickier for tracking incidents in foreign countries.Mr. Lott, meanwhile, turned to data from the University of Maryland’s Global Terrorism Database and followed up with Nexis and web searches to try to catch cases that the database missed. He said good data exist only for recent years, so he looked from 1998 to 2012 and found 1,491 mass public shootings worldwide. Of those, only 43 — or 2.88 percent — were in the U.S. Divide that by per capita rates, and the U.S. comes in 58th, behind Finland, Peru, Russia, Norway and Thailand — though still worse than France, Mexico, Germany and the United Kingdom.< .He < > has released a 451-page appendix detailing each of the shootings and his thoughts on how he classified it, and he shared his data with other academics, including, he said, Mr. Lankford. So, a sensational report detailing the terrible state of US Firearms Mass killing is issued and the source data? Never released, so no possibility of a Peer Review.A follow-up, with expanded & signNowly more data (to the tune of 6x the number of data points) shows the total opposite. AND ALL OF THE DATA IS PUBLISHED IN A DETAILED APPENDIX SET! -
Why should it be so complicated just figuring out how much tax to pay? (record keeping, software, filling out forms . . . many times cost much more than the amount of taxes due) The cost of compliance makes the U.S. uncompetitive and costs jobs and lowers our standard of living.
Taxes can be viewed as having 4 uses (or purposes) in our (and most) governments:Revenue generation (to pay for public services).Fiscal policy control (e.g., If the government wishes to reduce the money supply in order to reduce the risk of inflation, they can raise interest rates, sell fewer bonds, burn money, or raise taxes. In the last case, this represents excess tax revenue over the actual spending needs of the government).Wealth re-distribution. One argument for this is that the earnings of a country can be perceived as belonging to all of its citizens since the we all have a stake in the resources of the country (natural resources, and intangibles such as culture, good citizenship, civic duties). Without some tax policy complexity, the free market alone does not re-distribute wealth according to this "shared" resources concept. However, this steps into the boundary of Purpose # 4...A way to implement Social Policy (and similar government mandated policies, such as environmental policy, health policy, savings and debt policy, etc.). As Government spending can be use to implement policies (e.g., spending money on public health care, environmental cleanup, education, etc.), it is equivalent to provide tax breaks (income deductions or tax credits) for the private sector to act in certain ways -- e.g., spend money on R&D, pay for their own education or health care, avoid spending money on polluting cars by having a higher sales tax on these cars or offering a credit for trade-ins [ref: Cash for Clunkers]).Uses # 1 & 2 are rather straight-forward, and do not require a complex tax code to implement. Flat income and/or consumption (sales) taxes can easily be manipulated up or down overall for these top 2 uses. Furthermore, there is clarity when these uses are invoked. For spending, we publish a budget. For fiscal policy manipulation, the official economic agency (The Fed) publishes their outlook and agenda.Use # 3 is controversial because there is no Constitutional definition for the appropriate level of wealth re-distribution, and the very concept of wealth re-distribution is considered by some to be inappropriate and unconstitutional. Thus, the goal of wealth re-distribution is pretty much hidden in with the actions and policies of Use #4 (social policy manipulation).Use # 4, however, is where the complexity enters the Taxation system. Policy implementation through taxation (or through spending) occurs via legislation. Legislation (law making) is inherently complex and subject to gross manipulation by special interests during formation and amendments. Legislation is subject to interpretation, is prone to errors (leading to loopholes) and both unintentional or intentional (criminal / fraudulent) avoidance. The record keeping and forms referred to in the question are partially due to the basic formula for calculating taxes (i.e., percentage of income, cost of property, amount of purchase for a sales tax, ...). However, it is the complexity (and associated opportunities for exploitation) of taxation legislation for Use # 4 (Social Policy implementation) that naturally leads to complexity in the reporting requirements for the tax system.

How do you tell a friend or signNow out to someone that can help your friend, that their drug problem is out of control (doesn't eat good, doesn't take care of self, doesn't work, is stealing & selling things for drugs) when you do drugs too?
That's a very difficult and extraordinary touchy subject that's for sure…You don't want to come off as a hypocrite by lecturing them about drug use when you are using to. Even though you may be a functional addict while they are near rock bottom addict…So I'd say start by maybe just hinting and suggesting that they haven't been looking so good lately and your making sure theyre doing okay.Or just casually ask how things have been, you've been a little worried because of (insert activities, behaviors, physical appearances, health)You can take a less direct approach and ask someone who's maybe closer to them to bring these things up and talk to them.Always go about this from the worried, caring, wanting the best for them angle. Any other angle will most likely set them off. Rage or shutting down completely emotionally, denial, all can be expected regardless of the approach taken. But make sure to point out that it's not like you personally have room to talk it just seems like they have been in a rough spot and been doing alot of shady things lately and your just worried about them is all. Don't want to see them land in jail or hospital or wherever else…Say they haven't looked happy in a long time. Are they happy with how theyre living their life right now? Are they content with how things are going? Are they sure they want to continue on the road their on? If your able offer a helping hand and offer to help them quit if they want to. Either way your there for them to talk to.Concern, caring, worried, upsetting, wanting them to be happy, healthy, etc.If they start lashing out, ease off and just tell them okay nevermind. I was worried, but if you don't want to talk about it that's fine, I'll drop it.That may or may not get them to calm down enough to continue a different conversation. The whole process isn't going to be quick. You may have to try several times before any kind of real progress gets made. If you care enough about them be there for them. Let them know your there. And when they finally do signNow out for help, jump on that, don't hesitate even a minute.Good luck!

How is it possible for someone to be completely blacked out from drugs and alcohol but still walking around and talking, and if they’re blacked out what’s controlling their actions and choices?
An interesting study in the Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health Alcohol-Induced Blackout adds to Ms. Tiede’s answer on memory and blackouts. The research shows that along with a “failure to save” operation in a blackout, there are also “retrograde memory problems”, difficulties in memory retrieval (there are memories but the brain is unable to access them).Their appears to be a genetic marker for blackouts. There is speculation that blackouts might predispose a person for alcoholism by limiting memory of an alcohol related episode to just the early stages (where the experience is still one of predominately amusement and positive feelings) and not the later, more problem oriented stage. The lack of memory encoding and difficulties around retrieval also help explain the curious phenomenon of people going into multi-day blackouts and being able to be seen as relatively sober (all alcohol having been metabolized by then).

I have a PC, an external recording interface, and some studio monitors, all have different volume controllers. Does it matter from where I manage the sound? How to get the best quality out of my speakers in terms of volume?
So you don’t add noise or distortion to the signal I would set all the volumes neutral (equal zero cut / zero gain) and then set the normal listening volume with the studio monitors. On the PC zero will probably be a little line about 90% up the fader. The audio interface ( I think) should be similar about 90%. Then if you want the volume a little louder or quieter you can use which ever is easier to control, the audio interface or the computer to tweak the volume for whatever situation. If you want it way louder or quieter adjust the studio monitors.
