Both are brilliant schools. The campus, infrastructure, reputation…everything stands first for both. If one had to pick one or compare, you would have to go visit it personally. The basic difference that I have observed is the dress code and teaching techniques maybe. I’d recommend one to visit it personally.However, I’m listing few facts and my thoughts on the Phillips Exeter Academy.It’s not just a streak of genius that’s common between these three successful figures. What really binds them together is that they are all alumni of one School – Phillips Exeter Academy. It is this academy that nurtured their innovativeness with a remarkable approach to learning.Phillips Exeter Academy regularly appears in Business Insider’s list of top schools in America, and their list of noteworthy alumni does not stop here. John Irving (Novelist and Screenwriter) and Tom Steyer (Billionaire Hedge fund manager) are some of the other highly successful ‘Exonians’.With a tried and tested formula in hand, an Ivy-league dominated management board and alumni network, this school has a legacy to aspire for. It is also a member of the G20 schools group. It is one of the most sought after boarding schools of the country. Moreover, it is extremely selective in nature about the students they take in. Only the most talented candidates make up the 19% of yearly applications that finally make it to the school to become Exonians.A large number of the students who step out of Phillips Exeter Academy are welcomed by some of the most prestigious institutions for their higher education, as indicated by the academy’s College Matriculation figures for Classes 2015 to 2017. Before I answer, let me just say this: whether or not you are accepted to Exeter is WAY MORE than just a simple referendum on or judgment of you. A vast universe of parameters comes into play. Odds are low. Because lots of people apply. And most of those people are smart, and driven, and accomplished. But a lot of those people only apply because it's Exeter. When I attended, I knew plenty of kids who, when asked why they were at Exeter, could only reply, "It's Exeter," like how when you asked why they wanted to go to Harvard, could only reply, "It's Harvard." As in, doesn't EVERYbody want to go to Exeter? Or Harvard? Not everybody wants to go to boarding school. Or college. Of the people who do, to a man and woman they would each be better off not necessarily at Exeter or Harvard but at an institution which best meets their needs. Someplace they feel comfortable. Someplace that works for them and for which they're willing to work. One school simply cannot compile the best minds in every conceivable field. And no one school is guaranteed to open doors and secure employment.People who don't know any better might salivate at an Exeter or a Harvard on a resume, but do you really want to work with/for people who don't know any better? As far as college acceptance goes ... also a mixed bag. I went to Exeter and had a 1570 SATs (impressive in 1998) but I was rejected from nearly every college I applied to - both because I had a flat-B average putting me right in the middle of my class, which when combined with my scores made me seem lazy, and also because I was whiny emo prick at the time. Point being, those grades and scores would have greatly enhanced my chances of getting into schools if I'd stayed at public school in southern California -but because I was at Exeter, excellence wasn't anything special.I hope that answers your question and perhaps others.

In interest of full disclosure, I am a student at TJHSST. However, I have also considered applying for Phillips Exeter. Here are my thoughts:First of all, Phillips Exeter is a private school. Unless you were to live very close, boarding school would be your only option.Since Phillips Exeter is a private school, you would also have to consider the fairly high cost of tuition and room and board, etc. However, you shouldn't let this be a huge factor in making a decision because they offer lots of scholarships.The benefit of going to a private school is mainly the small class sizes, in my opinion.However, TJHSST is one of the top public high schools in the country, located in one of the most competitive counties in the country. It offers lots of opportunities for students.Lastly, and most importantly, is that TJ is more specialized in STEM. This is what helped me make my decision. I'm very interested in technology, and TJ provides the opportunities to build on those interested.I think that in the end, it depends on the type of learning experience you would prefer. Both schools have very bright students and lots of learning opportunities. If you like a small class size and the boarding school experience, Phillips Exeter is the way to go. However, if you want a STEM focused high school that still has a very competent fine arts program, TJ would be the best choice.

If you’re a student, you should possibly be able to answer this question.If you’re a prospective parent, ideally, you would be able to guide your student to answer this question.Nevertheless, just do a quick gauge by looking for individual class numbers. I don’t have the latest numbers handy, but the school has approximately 1100 students and if you divide that up by 4 (9th through 12th), you should get roughly 275 students per class. The latest estimates of the admissions rate is around 16%. If you divide the number of students by .16, you’ll arrive at the number:1718 (approximately).Since there are actually students who say “no” after receiving word from the elite boarding school, you can possibly even estimate a little higher.Hope that helps (not only with the number, but also in how to figure out math problems like this ;)

Though I think they're a bit overrated, both are undoubtedly great schools and offer great educational opportunities.Stuyvesant High SchoolLocation: New York CityType: Public, magnet schoolTuition: FreeSpecialization: STEMSize: 700-800 students/classAverage SAT Score: 2160Phillips Exeter AcademyLocation: Exeter, New HampshireType: Private, Boarding SchoolTuition: $46,905 (boarding)Specialization: Liberal ArtsSize: 250 students/classAverage SAT Score: 2107Personally, I would much rather attend Stuyvesant. The difference in education is not worth ~$225,000. Furthermore, I would prefer a STEM education over a liberal arts one, I would much rather be in NYC than New Hampshire, and (it seems) that Stuyvesant students are a tad bit sharper.However, believe it or not, I would actually prefer to attend my high school (Carmel High School) over either of them. It's a very large school (5,000 students) with many of your "typical" high school students and a small portion (3-6 each class) of exceptional students (IChO & IPhO gold medals, Intel STS, etc). I think the inherent diversity of a large public school has been beneficial in creating opportunities, keeping top students humble and socially adept, and ensuring a relatively relaxed learning environment where no one really feels the need to "compete" or show off.Like I said, both Stuyvesant and Phillips Exeter are great schools. But they're not at all worth thinking too much about if you attend somewhere else, and they are by no means a prerequisite for success, learning, or enjoying high school.

I have never taught in, or attended, an elite Ivy League feeder school, so I am the first to say my answer is informed by that. However, I have worked with students across all ability and economic levels, in five different states, and my feeling is that people are people—-and that includes students. Students in any forum can be confident, or arrogant, solid scholars or lazy as all get out, friendly and outgoing, or shy and introverted, etc. Wherever you are, you will find all types. An elite private school, Ivy League or otherwise, will probably have a more enriched curriculum, in the sense of more advanced, honors, and AP classes—-but public schools who have the size to offer those do so, and the differences in students in advanced work and otherwise may have more to do with the scholastic ambition of the student than it does to whether the school is elite or not.It is very smart to remember that attending a private school has some differences from attending a public school—-and those differences do not involve content. Private schools cost more, and private schools do not have the same requirement to put up with behavior they do not like. So, private schools (even less than Ivy League private schools) may impose more rules that students in public schools feel impinge on their rights. I don’t think that really indicates a difference in the students, but it is a fact to consider when thinking about private schooling.
