I am not sure if there is a formal quality control checklist for refactoring a service. I will provide with set of steps I would take when refactoring.First thing to keep in mind is the refactoring means that you’re changing the structure of the code without changing the behavior. Thus, first of all make sure the code being refactored is covered by unit tests (don’t try to fix bugs or etc since that isn’t what refactoring is for). This ensure that any changes you make can be validated right away. Next step would be to refactor the code in smaller chucks (start with small changes and work up. ex: variable name changes, single method changes, then class level changes) while validating the changes against the unit tests. Once the code is refactored you want to validate the performance of the new changes against the previous code because previously performance might have been driving factor. Lastly, release the new factor code in smaller scope while comparing the exceptions or errors generated by the new and old code along with production level performance or latency.

Trust me, I lived it, you are probably being scammed.
