I don’t like my name. Well not as much as my ex-name.My name is Divyansh Mundra (currently). The first name Divyansh was picked up by me when I was about 15 years old and legally changed.Divyansh is not the name by which my family knows me, nor do the people who’ve known me since the time that I was born call me ‘Divyansh’ because Divyansh was not my birth name.My grandfather gave me the coolest of names, and I wish that I could have kept it with me.Sadly, English happened.You’ll know why.When this guy was born, he looked like this-(My mom drew a sketch of me after a few days when I was born. My dad was away and there were no cell phones available then to just click and WhatsApp the pic of your baby)And my grandfather gave me the name दिव्य (Divya), which means divine or angelic or heavenly.It’s quite awesome if you ask me.(Translations have been included in the picture)But there was a catch-दिव्य (Divya) cannot be written in English without meaning something else. दिव्या (Divya) on the other hand can be.दिव्या (pronounced like Divyaaa) and दिव्य (pronounced somewhat like Divyha) are both spelled the same in English as Divya. But दिव्या is the name of a girl, while दिव्य is the name of a boy.So courtesy of English medium schools across the country, I had to write my beautiful name दिव्य as Divya, which is popularly the name of a girl.So while marking attendance, the teacher would look up in surprise after hearing a male voice.Also, when you’re writing your name as that of a girl, you’re handing out a loaded weapon to your friends. They don’t even have to try to come up with names to tease you.Naturally, by the time I was in eighth standard, I was a shy little kid who’ll have stage fear— not because he was afraid to speak in front of a crowd, but because of the humiliation he’d have to face when the announcer would spell the name of a girl instead.After facing a lot of ridicule and shattered ego on many instances, I forced my parents to get my name changed.What could I name myself without doing any damage?Divya became Divyansh, and I finally breathed a whiff of fresh air. Divyansh just means part-divine, but if it saves you the embarrassment of the name of a girl, it’s fine with me.If you can’t be the god, you be the demi-god. The vast majority of the people on Quora who claim to “know Middle English” do not actually know Middle English; they only think they know it. Sure, there are a few genuine Middle English experts on here who really do know Middle English, but most people with “Knows Middle English” as a language credential on their profiles do not.This little bit of confusion here arises from a variety of factors. Everyone here knows that Quora allows people to give a language credential on their profile. Many people, wanting to fill out their profile all the way, feel obliged to fill out this credential as well. The problem is that most people on here only speak English, but English-language Quora does not allow anyone to give “Knows English” as a language credential because, since this is English-language Quora, it is assumed that anyone contributing here knows English. Simply put, if you did not know English, you would not be contributing to English-language Quora.Quora does, however, allow you to give “Knows Old English” and “Knows Middle English” as language credentials—and for good reason. Old English and Middle English are distinct enough from Modern English that knowing either of them genuinely counts as a credential. The problem is that most people do not realize how different Middle English is from Modern English, so they put down “Knows Middle English” as a credential on their profile, thinking, “Well, it’s close enough, right?”What most people think of when they hear the words “Middle English” is Geoffrey Chaucer’s long poem The Canterbury Tales, which was written between 1387 and 1400. Not for me it doesn’t and let’s be honest here, what does the freedom of movement actually enable?The basic premise is it allows folk in countries within the EU to up sticks and go to any other country within the EU - no questions asked (more or less). The upshot being, anyone can go where they please and legitimately claim the same as those who were born, have lived, earned and paid taxes in the target country.That’s the nuts and bolts of it in 4 lines.As you can imagine, the freedom of movement policy has meant the UK has flourished in certain sectors because we have been able to recruit intelligent and hardworking individuals that, perhaps, were denied the chance to progress in their own country.It has also meant we have taken in an inordinate amount of lazy, free-loading loafers who; contribute nothing to the country other than being a drain on the economy, who commit crimes and ultimately, treat the UK and its denizens with utter contempt.What’s going to change when we leave the EU? Well, let me tell you a story:I work all over the world in North/South America, Asia and the Middle East and have to fill out a visa form for almost every country I work in. Do I kick up a fuss about it? Do I scream blue murder at the inconvenience of having to fill out - yet more - paperwork? Do I blame the establishments concerned for employing unnecessarily bureaucratic measures?No.I take the 5 minutes it takes to fill the form out and submit it. Sometimes, I have to send it to or go with my passport to the Embassy. Do I care? Not in the slightest and do you know why I don’t care?Because these measures are in place to protect the welfare of the country I’m visiting.The UK moving out of the EU puts a stop to the freedom of movement. We don't enjoy it anywhere else in the world and yet, it doesn’t prevent us from travelling, working or emigrating to those places. That is exactly how it should be and how the UK will be once we leave.Yes, we will have to apply for a visa to enter European countries. We will lose the obvious benefit of being able to easily recruit genuine candidates to come and work here without the need for said visas - but are those really valid issues or insurmountable obstacles? Nope, because if a candidate is good enough and credible, they’ll get in and we’ll welcome them.By taking back control of our borders we prevent the undesirables from coming in and taking the piss, and that far, far outweighs any potential negatives.So, in answer to your question; do I care about losing my freedom of movement in the EU?No, I welcome it because, with respect to public and economic welfare, it’s the most responsible decision we’ve ever made.
