How much time would you budget out to ghost write a 20,000 word book on an unfamiliar subject?
Thanks for the A2A.How much time would you budget out to ghost write a 20,000 word book on an unfamiliar subject? It depends upon the subject. If I were to, for example, be asked to write a STAR WARS story, it would take a hell of a long time to read everything/watch everything already done so that I would feel I knew what I could and couldn’t do and what has already been done. I probably wouldn’t take it on.Something like a sequel to Dumb and Dumber would take, what? six hours to watch the films already made?Something like a history of Manhattan from 1910 to 1925 would be outside the scope of what I would ghostwrite. I’m no expert and I don’t want to take the years to learn all the stuff I would feel I needed to become one to write that. I would, however, take an expert’s attempt at writing a book and fix it for them, no research time necessary. So the problem here is not only how unfamiliar a subject is, but how accessible. If I needed to ghostwrite an autobiography, I would expect to spend many hours with the subject. Days to weeks, depending.Know your limits. Don’t get in over your head. And remember, if you are ghostwriting something, then someone else is getting all the credit. If that person is an expert, why would you need to do research? You have them.Chances are the person who wants you to ghostwrite knows what they want written, just not how to do it. A 20k word book shouldn’t take that long to outline and write, but nailing that person down into figuring out what they REALLY wanted can be hard and take a long time.Sorry this was a pretty vague answer, but the question was too broad.

What should my budget be when hiring a publicist for my book? This is my first time and I am unsure of the process and the budget, to get my published book out there.
The best answer would be $0.00 - there are a lot of ways to market your book, but unless you have good reviews and stellar sales, it’s a bad return on investment. You need to build a label, a market, a reputation for quality, AND give readers every indication that you’re not a ‘one book wonder’. They want to see more books from an author they love.

What do I need to know about marketing my self-published book on a limited budget?
The best thing you can do is start marketing when you decide to write the book...not after you wrote the book. This way you can gain the following (now, hold on for a little bit with me, but the below will become important in answering your real question):Understanding of what your target market wantsWhere your target market is on the internetValidation for your productWhy Care About These?Validation and Understanding Is Important: Validation helps to ensure that you have the right book for the target market of intention. Orson Scott Card wrote the epic book "Ender's Game." When he wrote it, he thought it was for adults. However, a couple of years later, he found that the true fans were middle school aged children. After the realization, he made changes to the book and cover so as to optimize for that generation. In his case, he was still successful. However, in most cases, the target market will buy the book, and destroy it in reviews because it wasn't what they wanted - not because it was bad. Marketing while writing helps to validate your ideas and ensure you are marketing it to the right people. Where is the REAL Market: Most authors finish the book and then decide to start marketing. However, they are in a rush to get things going and start experimenting with platforms in order to market their book. In most cases they find this to be frivolous and a waste of time or money. Because of the need for speed and the experimenting, the costs increase, and mistakes are made. More Specific Tactics? How do I market a Young Adult book series with little to no budget?
The internet. That's what writers do now.Go on as many social media websites as possible. Make a hashtag for your book on Twitter. Post on Facebook in the right groups. Go on tumblr (if you want weird fandoms, lol), and any other website you can think of.Promoting your book can be absolutely free now, with the internet and whatnot. It's actually a sort of requirement (a lot of writers hate it and they just make their agents do the work or something, haha).Make sure you go on all the proper websites.

If you had a 9 week sabbatical and could only take one meaningful trip for two weeks tops anywhere in the world, where would you go? And why?
(I'm an outdoors person so my answer is a bit outdoors-ish...)I would consider Dolomites region, Italy. great culture, great food, amazing views and outdoors options, and 2 weeks are a decent period for it. weather needs to be taken into account, though. another thing you could do is using the first seven weeks to get into a skill/hobby you always wanted to learn, and then use the last 2 weeks to utilize it. for example - hike twice a week and go climb mt. kilimanjaro? go running every day and do a huge marathon in Europe? get into rock climbing and climb in Kalymnos, Greece? learn to scuba dive and go to the great barrier reef?3'rd option is to go visit a place (or places) you were always curios/fascinated by. that really ignites your imagination. for me it's mt. Everest (but that takes 4-5 weeks at least). maybe the Galapagos islands? Tierra del Fuego, Chile? Paris, France?remember 2 weeks fly by really fast, so you can't afford to waist time in planes or lose time to bad weather. Iceland is a great pick, but only in mid-summer.also - don't pick a destination that is too touristic (like Taj Mahal or machu picchu or the great wall of china) because you can't have a real deep experience if it is, and it would probably won't live up to your expectations.BTW - Israel is not a bad option. mostly good weather year-round and a lot of diversity in a very small area. you can visit Jerusalem, party in Tel Aviv, scuba dive in Eilat, hike in the dessert, experience a few very different cultures and eat great food. you can also go to Petra, Jordan or Giza, Egypt pretty easily. Anyways - you have the best dilemma ever. I envy you so much! :)

How do you decide how much money to budget for editorial services and book cover design when self publishing a book?
Hi Edward and Kat,Great question!Editors often quote services based on the length of a book, which makes sense. To spend time editing a 65,000 word novel takes less of their time than editing a 100,000 word novel. That being said, once you find an editor, their pricing usually stays within the same parameters based on your book length.I’ve paid all over the map. Developmental edits cost the most. That’s where someone is dissecting your story, plot, characters, giving feedback on plot holes, the structure and layout of your whole STORY. Dev edits can run $900-$1400 or more.Copyedits are where they are adding commas, taking out a ton of gerunds, more grammar and sentence structure. The BONES of the book. I’ve paid as low as $175 for this for a 70,000 word book. Today, it would be higher.I’m lucky that my editor actually does both and combines both.As a guess, for a book 70,000 words, I’d say budget $1500 for editing.Book cover design, again, all over the map with pricing. I’ve heard authors say you can’t get a decent cover for less than $500. That’s BS. I have amazing covers and I’ve paid less than that. Ask around, see what you can find. Sometimes you can find a graphic artist on a place like deviant art and hire them. As a general guideline, I’d say budget $250 for a book cover. Some may be less, some may be more, depending on stock photos and work needed.Yes, these are costs for the self pubbed author, but not having a great cover and not having an edited book will only make your book tank and have dismal sales.
