People have made living in Charleston out to be everything from a paradise to a nightmare. Of course, it can be either or both of those things depending on your circumstances. Naturally, the more financially successful you are the better off you will be. Charleston has grown exponentially over the past few decades. Overall, I think this growth has been good for Charleston but it doesn’t stop me from feeling a bit nostalgic for the Charleston of the 1970’s or even earlier. One major tip that I could suggest is to live as close as possible to where you work. That will eliminate much of your traffic congestion woes. I live a mile and a half from my work and it takes me perhaps 3 or 4 minutes to get back and forth.

You can get around without a car  no problem, it's a very walkable city, really just two main streets running down the city. Charleston is a great food city, the restaurants are as good as any you're likely to find in San Francisco or New York. I recommend Poogan's Porch, but there are many other great options. Check out King Street, market Street or the Battery for some great shops and cool old mansions. Really the architecture is what makes Charleston. A nice walk in the Battery or the College of Charleston campus has made more than a few people fall in love with the city.

You have some of the best restaurants, the beach and it is close to many other beaches as well such as Myrtle Beach. It is not far from the mountains as well. The MUSC hospital is one of the best. It has Fort Sumter. I love Charleston and I actually live in Columbia SC but have visited it for decades. It is a well known city for tourists. It is only about 11/2 hours from Columbia, SC. One of the best colleges. There is just so much in Charleston to do and see.

Once we arrived, we would compete with one another to see who could get a greased watermelon back to the beach of Shutes Folley Island where the ruins of the fortification remain. I have been to both and feel like it has to do with where you are. Of course, River street is going to feel kind of cheap and tawdry in Savannah, because it is the party spot.
