FIRST stands for Formerly Incarcerated Re-Entry Students Thriving. The program started at El Camino back in spring of 2020 when the college received the grant from the Rising Scholars Network. Our mission and vision is really to disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline. And to create a pathway from prison to higher education by ensuring that our students are provided with services, with care and compassion. Given the opportunity to bring a program of this magnitude to the college campus was definitely a big undertaking. We really wanted to give an opportunity and a voice and a sense of community to those individuals who had been formerly incarcerated/system-impacted. I've had support from business counselors. I’ve had support from CalWorks counselors. And it's so much better. Our goal is to empower our students by providing a network of support.
