Hi, I’m Gary Cantrell, Deputy Inspector General for Investigations at the Department of Health and Human Services OIG. The majority of this country’s child support cases fall under State jurisdiction. But the Federal government can intervene in cases where parents don’t pay child support for more than 1 year or noncustodial parents owe more than $5,000 and their child lives in a different state. We can also intervene when noncustodial parents travel to another state or country to avoid paying child support. These are felony offenses and my agents will work tirelessly to ensure violators are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Since 2006, our coordinated efforts have helped convict more than 500 deadbeat parents who failed to pay more than $33 million in child support payments.
