The man known to history as John Adams was born on the 30th of October 1735 in the town of Braintree in Massachusetts, just south of Boston and overlooking Boston Harbour. His father was John Adams Senior, a farmer and deacon, who also dabbled in shoemaking and was a tax collector in the local region. He was the great-grandson of Henry Adams, who had immigrated to Massachusetts from Braintree in Essex in England in 1638 and established the first colonial settlement at Braintree, Massachusetts, which he named after his hometown back in England. John Adams Senior was an affluent enough figure in Braintree that he was able to purchase his own farmstead at Quincy to the north of the town itself, though the family could not be said to have been especially wealthy.
