For a scientific work I have built the following structure. In order to create an automatic table of contents from this, I first have to format the headings. For this I use the templates that I find under Start. In particular, we need headings 1, 2 and so on. I mark the main headings as Heading 1. I mark the sub-items that belong to the main heading as Heading 2. I format the sub-items for Heading 2 as Heading 3. To insert the automatic table of contents, we click on the References tab, Table of contents, Table of contents again and select the first example. It is also advisable to add automatic numbering. We find this under Start, Paragraph, List and select this format. Now, we only have to update the automatic table of contents to apply the numbering here as well. Continuous text can now be inserted under the respective heading. If you want to change the order of the headings or change the level of a heading, it is recommend to take a look at the outline view.
