Good evening! If people could sort of find their seats ... First of all, my name is Brian Winer. I'm the Chair of the Physics Department here at Ohio State and on behalf of our department the College of Arts and Sciences in the University, I want to welcome you to the 57th Alpheus Smith Lecture. This is a lecture that we hold annually and it's intended to bring distinguished scientists to Ohio State to present insights on subjects of scientific interest to the campus community. The lecture is named for Alpheus Smith. It's a tribute to his memory and it was made possible by donations from his family and friends. If this is your first time with us, I just want to give you a little bit of background on Alpheus Smith and who he was. He was a Physics professor back in - he started here in 1909, so over a century ago, he became chairman of the Physics Department in 1927. In 1938, he became Dean of the Graduate School. He tried to retire in 1946, but was immediately roped into being presiden
