In fact, New Jerseyians declared independence more than 400 times between 1834 and 1957, and the number of municipalities grew from 125 to 568. Things came to a sudden halt during the Depression. Using Hong Kong as an example, which functions as an autonomous region within China, meaning it maintains a separate political and economic system including independent executive, legislative and judiciary powers. This sounds an awful lot like the concept floated around by the Parti Quebecois for a long time only they called it “sovereignty association”.The rest of Canada…including Ontario wasn’t particularly fond of that concept.As it is the Ontario RM’s “regional municipalities” (Peel, Durham etc.) aren’t really municipalities in the traditional sense of the word; the towns and cities within each of those municipalities maintains it’s own government. These regional municipalities were set up by the Ontario provincial government when southern Ontario (particularly the “401 corridor”) started undergoing a period of rapid growth in the early 1970’s. Individual municipalities were having a hard time providing services so the RM’s were formed to provide shared services (mostly things like policing and garbage collection-but several others as well)Most of the RM’s would probably not be very happy to lose their local governments in favour of a single central government (like Hong Kong)-and that central government would be in Toronto. All the tax dollars would go there then be handed back out; this might not bode well for smaller, more rural communities. (though Toronto would probably like the idea).It should also be noted that under the current Hong Kong political system, called Functional Constituency corporations are “given” votes; in some constituencies none of the registered voters are actual people but corporate entities. I don’t think that system would fly in Canada.
