Black History Month grants us the opportunity  to shine a light on African-Americans central   role in American history and major contributions  to American culture this month reminds me of my   own family's history and how their legacy weaves  into the larger tapestry of this country's black   history when we humanize history through these  types of lived experiences tragedies and triumphs   we pay ultimate tribute to the contributions  of black pioneers and trailblazers this year's   Black History Month theme is African-Americans  and the Arts where we get to examine the varied   history of African-American art and artisans  African-American contributions to the arts are   the foundation of so much of American culture as  a music lover and musician myself I understand   and appreciate the importance of Black artists  using their art including music to preserve   history and community memory and to empower future  generations artistic and cultural movements
