Recently I have come across a possible scam about counterfeit/fake products in India. Counterfeit/fake products are nothing new to Indian Society. These products are easily available in markets like Pallika Bazar (Delhi), Fashion street (Mumbai) etc. You can get first copy products of many branded companies included Puma, Nike, Adidas, Reebok (shoes, t-shirts etc), Micheal Kors, Guess (hand bags, Purse). There are markets where you can easily get copies of branded wrist watches and even perfumes. But people who buy products from these markets are aware of the fact that these are duplicate products.No, No… This is not the scam I am talking about. The scam starts from next level. It involves giant e-commerce websites including Snapdeal. The people who lives in India are pretty much aware of this e-commerce website and the discounts which it offers on multiple products including clothing, electronics and many other things.Recently, I was surfing on Facebook, then there was an advertisement regarding sales on Nike Shoes. It obviously got my attraction. I was amazed to see the discounts on shoes. Some discounts were close to 60% of the market value. It was a great deal. I thought of giving it a try because I did not want to miss the deal. And I am sure many people like me might have got attracted to same deals and bought the shoes from the website. I received the product within 3 days. When I opened the package, I was shocked to see that the shoes were duplicate (I am a regular user). I showed it to one of my friends, he told that “Shi to hai yaar, tujhe aise hi lag rha h” - (It is good bro, you are having false doubts). But still I wanted to get it tested from official Nike store to confirm. I visited the Nike store and they confirmed my doubt. The shoes were fake. I contacted Snapdeal regarding this problem. They told me that I can return the product and they would be refunding my money. But then I asked, what are you going to do to seller who is sending fake products using your website. He replied with standard answer - “We will look into this matter. We take extreme care before onboarding any seller. Blah Blah…..!!!” He even told me that the seller was Authorised Nike Dealer.Then, I understood the whole concept behind the huge discounts on branded materials. These websites are full of such kind of sellers. The sellers provide huge discounts on branded products (though they are cheap fake products which are easily available in market at no more than Rs. 500–700). They sell these products at Rs. 2000–3000 by showing the original price equivalent to Rs. 6000–10000 (Equivalent to original prices in showrooms). This is how these sellers are looting people by selling them fake products. It it hard to notice if the products received are fake or original for new users as they look exactly the same in every manner. Since they are coming from a trusted channel (like Snapdeal), nobody sheds a doubt and may take them as original.Now, you must be thinking why these website allow such sellers on their websites. The reason is simple, it increases the number of sales on their websites and WHO DOES NOT WANT THAT. After all, the investors are looking for these sales figures.I hope you understood the scam. It is possible.My question in response is this: So what?The existence of the occasional asshole is no reason to refuse to install a Paper Abortion law that would assist those millions of men who aren't deadbeats. We started getting repeated calls from the “US Grant Department” claiming that they would give us a grant of $6240(?) dollars, if we paid enrollment into the program or something. I’m sure there was some legal reason for the dollar amount, like it was a dollar under the felony fraud amount or something. After a couple of these, asking where the grant department was headquartered, why their phone number showed a different area code, legal questions, etc, I finally found a way that actually tripped up these scumsuckers… I answered that I was REALLY excited about their program, how I REALLY needed the money and was so glad that I was gonna get a grant… but that there was just one problem. I NEEDED MORE MONEY. I started asking about how to get a grant for $11,500, could they hook me up? I asked if there was a manager I could speak to to request a larger amount, form to fill out for a waiver for more, another grant program, whether my minor children could apply, how long it would take to get the money, and whether I could go again afterwards, how about $11,200? When they started to flounder and get rude with me I threatened to report them to their manager! That finally got them to quit the call.

I came across a loophole in the library where I studied by pure accident. I used to go there to study and to also print out the lecture notes which were on average 40 pages long and the print was .10$ for each page. So basically i paid 4$ for each lecture i printed. This was a costly exercise for me and i spent on average 30$ each week for printing.The way it worked was, I had a library card and I recharged it as needed using the recharge machine. The recharge machine was about 5 feet tall and 2 feet wide. You had to insert the card, it would read it and then prompt you to insert the cash you wanted to recharge. Once that was done, you went to the print station, swiped your card on the card reader and then selected your file to print. Pretty basic stuff.One day I gave a few print jobs to the printer and went to the print station and swiped my card. I had to print 2 files of around 30 pages each. I had a credit of 3.70$ on my card. So I decided to print one file and then proceeded to the signNowarge machine to recharge the card while my file was printing. Keep in mind that the recharge machine and the print station were next to each other. Since my file was printing, I inserted my card into the recharge machine, it read my card and gave an error saying that the card is locked. I realized immediately that my card is currently being used by the printer and thus I am unable to use the card at 2 places at once. So I waited for the print to complete and then recharged my card to a value of 5$. So keep in mind I had 3.70$ initially, I printed 30 Pages, My credit should have dropped to .70$ and then recharged 5$ bringing the total to 5.70$. I did all the maths myself before proceeding to the print station and swiping my card. As I swiped my card, it showed me the current balance as 8.70$ instead of 5.70$ meaning I was not charged for the 30 pages i just printed. I quickly noticed and realized the error i got on the recharge machine while printing. I had another job to print, I gave the command to print and again inserted my card into the recharge machine and got the same error as card is currently blocked. I checked and was not charged again. And thats how I have been printing for a while now and my current balance is still 8.70$.I will notify the library eventually of the error and donate a certain amount. But for now, I am a student and its hard to make ends meet.
