You might also work for a district that requires you to chaperone student events… on Friday and Saturday nights. If you have to cover sporting events you might go into work at 7:30 in the morning and get home at 7:30 at night … and have to go back in 12 hours. You might also need every minute of your time off just to mentally recover. I know I do. It IS nice to be able to visit my family in other states during the holidays though.Are you the kind of person who thinks your private life is nobody elses’ business? Don’t be a teacher. Districts have different levels of tolerance, but where they draw the line can be a shocker, and you might now know where that is until it’s too late. If your personal life is at all interesting, be prepared to be secretive. Teachers have been fired for posting pictures of themselves drinking or posing in a bikini on facebook. They have lost their jobs because they were seen walking into bars or gay clubs—on their own time! And no, no one will stand up and SAY “We’re firing you because your gayness is unacceptable.” It can just start a whisper campaign that makes staying unbearable. You will become, like it or not, something of a public figure, with all that entails. For this reason, many teachers do not live within the district where they teach. Yeah, I make less money than a plumber, an electrician, or a lot of factory workers. However, I can sit down any time I want. If I’m half-way decent at my job, no one is going to be looking over my shoulder. I work in a classroom every day where I call the shots and it is climate-controlled. I do not work in a factory that can be shipped to China, people who will work cheaper or even under the table cannot be hired to replace me.Teaching is a job with cachet. For all the bullshit we endure, it is still a job that matters. Some factory workers get paid more, but nobody cares what THEY do for a living. Congress holds hearings on how I do MY job. When I meet strangers and they learn what I do, they never nod and politely say “That’s nice” before moving on. It’s a job that has influence on the course of society, however small. If you want a job that feels important, teaching does. This is a bigger deal than I ever would’ve believed when I went into this as a second career.Because there are actual legal requirements and expectations around the job, it tends to say something about you. Mediocre assholes tend to be (not always, but usually) weeded out. Women love hearing a guy is a teacher; they know automatically you are educated, have a steady paycheck, can pass a background check, and probably like kids. The last one may or may not be true, but at the very least you can tolerate them. The profession is very female-heavy, so if you’re a single male teacher on the lookout for educated, family-minded women with a work ethic and a real job … they’re just down the hall. A lot of teachers end up marrying other teachers. It’s easy to do.There is so much legally-required bullshit and hassle surrounding the job. But you’ll never understand why humanity is worth fighting for until you see your students at their best. Really.
