Some children, if placed into the care of good carers can get over their bad early start to life to a reasonable level of normality. It depends on the level of abuse and neglect, how long it has been going on and how resilient the child is. Quite often a child brought up in what is in effect a war zone for them will self learn defensive strategies which becomes their first response for any situation which they feel threatened or unfamiliar, even if we as carers don't identify any danger around, the child may see or sense something which will trigger a panic response from them. We were taught it's like when we grow up and learn to talk and that becomes our first language. If the survival strategies the child has learnt in their early years are like the first language. We are trying to teach them another way of reacting, a different language, but like when we struggle to find the right words in any second language we are trying to learn, they are struggling to find the correct response to a situation they are unfamiliar or with or scared about. Sadly many children don't manage to fully adjust to living in a safe environment and cling on to their “first language” response fully expecting to need those survival skills learnt as a young child in a hostile place

I know for sure that they all are abusing their children while fiercely denying that, and that they’d rather die, than stop the abuse.The next thing is that there’s nowhere to put those orphans, because neither there are enough orphanages, nor enough skilled and qualified personnel to bring up the children.The yet next thing is that even if there was enough orphanages and upbringers, a civil war would have begun, because, like I previously said, parents would rather die themselves or kill others than stop abusing their children.I think I might be just not smart enough to come out with an adequate solution. For example, in Russia over 50% of parents openly admit they beat their children up. If we just grab all these parents and imprison them, the country would turn into a big prison, which doesn’t seem an attractive vision of country’s future.Perhaps there should be lots of small steps towards a less violent society. Like, starting an official propaganda against child-beating on TV. Lessons in schools about how to deal with parent (and teacher) abuse. Internet services where a child can easily contact CPS for consultation and probable interference. Whichever next little island of counteraction leaves smaller and smaller patches for the swamp of violence.

It would be weird if the child hasn’t thought of or at least tried to do suicide. The general damage can be calculated but we are not that child so the damage cannot be accurately calculated.I’m not gonna say crap like “Poor child.” I’m not an idiot who pities people and won’t do anything to help. That kid went through neglect and emotional abuse, that child may be happy or sad depending on who died. I have no right to say “poor child” since I don’t know what that child went through.I am one who was once pitied and I know there are children who can grow stronger through that. There may be some points of breaking but if they can still stay strong, you got a unique child.The damage is too big for that kid to bear that unless that kid is very set on living.

Departments of education and school districts always have to make decisions about what to include in their curriculum.  There are a lot of life skills that people need that aren't taught in school.  The question is should those skills be taught in schools?I teach high school, so I'll talk about that.  The typical high school curriculum is supposed to give students a broad-based education that prepares them to be citizens in a democracy and to be able to think critically.  For a democracy to work, we need educated, discerning citizens with the ability to make good decisions based on evidence and objective thought.  In theory, people who are well informed about history, culture, science, mathematics, etc., and are capable of critical, unbiased thinking, will have the tools to participate in a democracy and make good decisions for themselves and for society at large.  In addition to that, they should be learning how to be learners, how to do effective, basic research, and collaborate with other people.  If that happens, figuring out how to do procedural tasks in real life should not provide much of a challenge.  We can't possibly teach every necessary life skill people need, but we can help students become better at knowing how to acquire the skills they need.  Should we teach them how to change a tire when they can easily consult a book or search the internet to find step by step instructions for that?  Should we teach them how to balance a check book or teach them how to think mathematically and make sense of problems so that the simple task of balancing a check book (which requires simple arithmetic and the ability to enter numbers and words in columns and rows in obvious ways) is easy for them to figure out.  If we teach them to be good at critical thinking and have some problem solving skills they will be able to apply those overarching skills to all sorts of every day tasks that shouldn't be difficult for someone with decent cognitive ability  to figure out.  It's analogous to asking why a culinary school didn't teach its students the steps and ingredients to a specific recipe.  The school taught them about more general food preparation and food science skills so that they can figure out how to make a lot of specific recipes without much trouble.  They're also able to create their own recipes.So, do we want citizens with very specific skill sets that they need to get through day to day life or do we want citizens with critical thinking, problem solving, and other overarching cognitive skills that will allow them to easily acquire ANY simple, procedural skill they may come to need at any point in their lives?
