Recently I was the victim of a military romance scam where I was talking to a Nigerian National posing as a US Soldier stationed there. Anyway once I realized I was being scammed I contacted an email monitored by the US Army. I asked them a specific question and I got a great response back. Part of that response addresses military personnel finding large sums of money or things of value. and asking the victim to help them pay to get it back to the States. This is part of the romance scam. I'm not sure if this is what's happening to you but I'll go ahead and list some things that scammers do just in case some of this might ring familiar to you. I'll also give you that response I got from the government.If your boyfriend girlfriend/future husband/wife is asking you to do the following or has exhibited this behavior, it is a scam:Moves to private messaging site immediately after meeting you on Facebook or SnapChat or Instagram or some dating or social media siteProfesses love to you very quickly & seems to quote poems and song lyrics along with using their own sort of broken language as they profess their love and devotion quickly. They also showed concern for your health and love for your family.Promises marriage as soon as he/she gets to state for leave that they asked you to pay for.They Requests money (wire transfers) and Amazon and I-tune gift cards for medicine, religious practices, and leaves to come home, internet access, complete job assignments, help sick friend, get him out of trouble, or anything that sounds fishy like paying to send gold home.The military does provide all the soldier needs. Unfortunately, this is a common concern. We assure you there is never any reason to send money to anyone claiming to be a Soldier online. If you have only spoken with this person online, it is likely they are not a U.S. Soldier at all. I'm assuming you are referring to CBP Form 3299- Declaration For Free Entry of unaccompanied Articles.Virtually everything you ship that has to do with setting up your household will be entitled to enter free of duty, so don't fret too much about values. Just estimate the best you can. Certainly a used book or DVDs might only be worth $1 each, or even less.If you ship a large amount of alcoholic beverages or tobacco products, you may have to pay some duty.It will be easier if you do not ship any agricultural products or food.And of course, do not ship any firearms, ammunition or contraband.CBP has very thorough instructions on how to fill out the form on-line. Dick and Sarah are both correct -- thanks to the $800 exemption you can do a fair amount of shopping without having to pay any duty. Also, certain items (books and printed materials, for example) are exempt (so if you buy books abroad you only have to worry about how much they weigh!).I'm a lawyer ("an officer of the court") so I always declare everything. Also I was raised with a lot of guilt so it would drive me crazy to know that they might open my bag and find stuff I didn't declare. I just use some of that time on the long flight home to make a list and add it all up and then figure out how to fit it all onto the little Customs form. I divide purchases into categories: stationery, apparel/accessories, souvenirs, home items, etc., and total up each category on a different line of the form to avoid using more than one form. Customs is totally OK with that although they might ask you for examples of items you classified on each line. If you say "Food," they will ask more questions, depending upon where you've been and what's prohibited, so if it's really just chocolates, for example, say that, and they won't be as concerned.My experience, having done a LOT of overseas shopping, is that even if you do declare more than $800, even considerably more, they will generally just thank you for your honesty and wave you through. I came back from a five week vacation to Australia, Thailand, and Cambodia with three large checked bags (having left the country with only one, although they didn't know that), and reported over $2000 in purchases. They asked me some questions about what I had bought (mainly to make sure I wasn't bringing in illegal stuff or importing for the purpose of sale), but when I showed them my list and talked through the various people I had bought gifts for they just sent me on my way.I can only think of one time when I was asked to pay anything. That’s how the system is rigged against the average guy. The rich people get smart people to do stuff for them that they can’t do for themselves. The poor people ask on Quora. You may save $1000 by asking here, and cost yourself or your estate $100,000 by doing so.
