I get more hands-on learning, especially in a laboratory setting, then any of my friends at other universities. By the spring quarter of my freshman year, I was able to pursue my own microbiology research project and present it to my classmates at the end of the quarter. On the flip side, Evergreen also attracts many students without purpose. With its high acceptance rates and lack of prerequisites for a degree, there is a clear demographic who simply use Evergreen as a diploma mill to get their parents off their back. These Slacker students tend to fill up classes and not contribute much to the learning environment.To end this on a positive note, however, I just want to say this: my absolute favorite thing about Evergreen is the ability to design your own curriculum and classes. If you cannot find a class about what you are truly interested in, if you can find a faculty sponsor, you will be able to do an independent contract and earn credits. To summarize, if you are driven about your education and are willing to pursue what you would like to learn whether or not you're able to find classes in your field, Evergreen might just be for you.

What is it like to be a summer student at the Evergreen State College? How is it different from the normal school year?

The courses are not full time, so you will get a smaller scale, more focused approach to the subject matter.Some of the classes go later into the evening than fall-spring classes.The course selection is smaller - I wouldn't expect to get a bachelors degree from summer classes alone.There are much fewer people around campus.Those are the biggest things that come to mind. Overall, summer classes are good for learning single subjects, but are ultimately not a substitute for the interdisciplinary programs which run fall-spring.

Downtown Olympia is fun—but I would recommend finding a group of friends to study and play with. If you’re a diligent student you won’t have much time during the weekend to play. You might enjoy walking in the forest, reading, or participating in club activities. Drinking alcohol isn’t helpful—and the kids who go to parties all the time don’t seem like serious students. There are a lot of clubs you can access through Student Activities (the third floor of the CAB), these folks will have plenty of ideas to occupy your free time. There is a club for almost every interest—and you only need four people to start a new group if you don’t see something you love.I wish I spent more time with SA while I was at Evergreen. I usually took between 16 and 20 credits a quarter, so I didn’t have much time for games. Join a club. Make some friends. ^_^ Attend workshops! Volunteer at the organic farm!Check out 89.3 FM KAOS. They’re the radio station on the college. They keep a calendar of events that can get you in touch with the Olympia community. Evergreen is a great school, but you have to be self-motivated and keep a good group of friends. :) Good luck! Study hard!!

the students shouldn’t be punished for promoting pro-segregationist stances to avoid being triggered from a white person, but i’m expecting them to be fair if white students want a white only area since they advocate for a colored only area. if the dean and faculty support the segregation stances of the protesters demands and actually made a colored only building possible then they will be no longer funded by the state since this goes against the 14 amendment and the civil rights act of 1964, which makes sure that discrimination is illegal. if the school is privately owned, then they can do whatever they want.but since it’s publicly funded, that idea must be either ejected or face the consequences from the state, which means no more funds.

How safe is the campus at the Evergreen State College and should anything be done to make it safer?

For one, it’s somewhat isolated and out in the woodsy section of Greater Olympia. I went to school there and had to take the bus on the way in and out when traveling to downtown.Having lived both at the University of Washington dorms and Evergreen dorms, I’d say without a doubt that the dorm area and in fact the entire campus at Evergreen are safer. The UW tended to get more weirdos preying on the people living in the dorms. Evergreen didn’t have half that trouble. The UW is in a major urban area, which makes it more vulnerable. I had my wallet stolen at the UW twice by leaving it somewhere for less than a couple minutes.The campus police at Evergreen often patrol the area. I learned this the hard way when I volunteered to work in the metal workshop over the summer (a little off the main campus in the woods) and did not return home but camped out there on the sofa. I did not tell anyone.Someone must have noticed a light going off and on there (maybe when I used the can) and the next thing I knew, there were about half a dozen flashlights shining in the windows. I was lying on the couch and stayed stock still. Eventually, they left without coming in. That was the first and only time I ever evaded the police.Any college can attract the wrong kind of people. Most colleges have campus police and they can be very quick to respond to an incident. Like super fast. Seen it before at the UW, but that’s another story.

Apparently yes, regardless of the backlash of the white students and the media frenzy on this story. Notice how when the white students get a chance to STAY HOME from school instead of going to class, they get upset for not being included when asked to stay home... a free day off any student would have loved, who wouldn't want that? But the feeling of exclusion and feeling like a VICTIM of being judged by their white skin color and being oppressed, ironically.Matter of fact, these kinds of events aren't uncommon.. there are plenty of BLACK EXCELLENCE gatherings, meetings, get togethers, support groups, etc. in school and in business/workplace which encourage black students/colleagues to attend and participle in the encouraging team building event. I think the college, instead of asking white students to stay home, they should have just had a black excellence event gathering for black students to get together, thus it would not make it APPEAR like they are excluding the white students. It's just the FEELING OF EXCLUSION making the white students feel bad REGARDLESS of giving them a FREE DAY OFF of school, resulting in protest and a media frenzy. When white people get a chance to become VICTIMS they will hop on it really fast because it gives them a narrative and reason to prove that they are victims of oppression, when in fact people of color are the real victims of oppression and the whole point of it all was to acknowledge that fact and encourage black students, letting them feel proud about themselves if at least for one day. We still live in a system that oppresses people of color through gerrymandering districts, providing more educational funding, healthcare, and resources for whites while often underfunding and ignoring black students and children. White privilege is a very difficult idea to process to someone who thinks their standard of living and opportunities are normal. A lot of white folks live close together in tight, closed off communities and they share their resources with one another while the poor colored people stay in slums and don't get the same opportunities.
