AARP age is 50, which is ridiculous, who retires at 50 other than those hitting the IPO jackpot and those people do not give a hoot about discounts. There are very few ‘senior’ discounts available to people under age 60 or 65. And those deals are often available to anyone that meets the age requirement, no AARP card required. AAA car rental discount = AARP discount, you cannot use both. If you had to choose go with AAA, AARP is not going ot come out in the middle of the night when your car won’t start.AARP is cheap enough, but you get what you pay for and you will be on the mailing list until your dying breath. I am past 50 and have renewed off and on and honestly have never used a single benefit or discount. The AARP is primarily a lobbying group. You get a magazine featuring older movie stars like Jane Fonda and Goldie Hawn showing us what it’s like to be in your 70’s (that is if you have great genes, tons of money, a live-in chef and personal trainer).I agree with this guy.. I am going to answer your 3 AARP questions in reverse order, First:How have you saved money by having the membership?As a former AARP Employee for over 25 years, I am a complementary AARP Lifetime member. So my membership is paid for by AARP, so this is not a totally fair question for me to answer. But I will give you some examples; I have found on Hotels / Motels that don’t have an AARP discount, often have an Automobile Club (AAA) discount, both which are usually around 10%. In the many years I have stayed in hotels, I have probably used my AARP discount twice in hotels which did NOT offer a AAA discount. I have used my AAA discount, many more times over the years. I have had a similar experience with car rental companies.What are their greatest assets to members?This is a great question and I am glad you asked! AARP offers a wide variety of discounts as well as access to Medicare Suppliment and Advantage Insurance plans, also Life Insurance, Tax Aid, Legal services, Driver Refresher courses all for people over 50. But I feel AARP’s greatest benefit is as an information resource for seniors. For example; when I was getting ready to retire I went to the AARP Website (www.aarp.org) and did a search on ‘Social Security Benefits’ and I got a wealth of information on when I had to file, how my benefits were calculated and the tax implications. The information was in question and answer form and very easy to understand. Their is also a wealth of information in their quarterly AARP Bulletin and their bi-monthly magazine ‘AARP the Magazine’. If information is what you're looking for.Are AARP memberships worth having?This is a very subjective question and therefore the answer would have to be; that depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for Medicare Suplemental or Advantage plans, Life Insurance or simply a wealth of information for seniors, then an AARP membership is definitely worth the $16 a year membership. A very modest fee that definitely won’t break the bank!
