(Department of Motor Vehicles, or in some states it is called Secretary of State's Office). once you are registered to vote, you receive a voter registration card by mail. in my state we are not required to show these to vote, but some do show it anyways. postcard notices are sent in the mail informing you of an upcoming election (about 2–3 months prior) on the appointed day you go to your voting location and vote. if you show up at the wrong polling place they can tell you where you are supposed to go, although if your state issues a voter registration card, the polling location is usually listed on that.the actual voting process varies from state to state. some do it by computer alone, some have a paper ballot you fill out then feed into a computerized reader for the vote to be tallied. they used to have large voting machines with a curtain, several small levers for you to make your selection, and then you pulled a big bar which then punched a paper ballot for you for the candidate you chose, as it opened the curtains for you to exit. these fell out of favor after the 2000(?) election where Bush 43 beat Gore due to "pregnant chads and hanging chads" caused by these machines. states everywhere ditched these tried and true machines which could not be hacked (although one year some showed up at polling places with a number of votes already on the machines!) for newer models.the workers at the polling place are supposed to be members of various parties, they have to follow certain procedures and must be present an hour before and an hour after polls open and close. no one is to be alone with the voting machines, paper ballots or tally machines at any time. i have never been involved with the process, so i don't know any details, and i have always wondered what happens to the stuff after it is picked up by the board of elections, each state does its own vote, so the exact details could vary from one state to another.
