What are some names you should not name your child?
Let's talk some data here -The twenty “Whitest” girl names -MollyAmyClaireEmilyKatieMadelineKatelynEmmaAbigailCarlyJennaHeatherKatherineCaitlinKaitlinHollyAllisonKaitlynHannahKathrynThe twenty “Blackest” girl names -ImaniEbonyShaniceAaliyahPreciousNiaDejaDiamondAsiaAliyahJadaTierraTiaraKiaraJasmineJasminJazminJasmineAlexisRavenThe twenty “Whitest” boy names -JakeConnorTannerWyattCodyDustinLukeJackScottLoganColeLucasBradleyJacobGarrettDylanMaxwellHunterBrettColinThe twenty “Blackest” boy names -DeShawnDeAndreMarquisDarnellTerrellMalikTrevonTyroneWillieDominiqueDemetriusReginaldJamalMauriceJalenDariusXavierTerranceAndreDarrylSo how does it matter if you have a very white name or a very black name? Over the years, a series of “audit studies” have tried to measure how people perceive different names. In a typical audit study, a researcher would send two identical (and fake) resumes, one with a traditionally white name and the other with an immigrant or minority-sounding name, to potential employers. The “white” resumes have always gleaned more job interviews.According to such a study, if DeShawn Williams and Jake Williams sent identical resumes to the same employer, Jake Williams would be more likely to get a callback. The implication is that black-sounding names carry an economic penalty. Such studies are tantalizing but severely limited for they can't explain why DeShwan didn't get the call. Was he rejected because the employer is a racist and is convinced that DeShawn Williams is black? Or did he reject him because “DeShawn” sounds like someone from a low-income, low-education family? A resume is a Fairly undependable set of clues - a recent study showed that more than 50 percent of them contain lies - so “DeShawn” may simply signal a disadvantaged background to an employer who believes that workers from such backgrounds are undependable.Nor do the black-white audit studies predict what might have happened in a job interview. What if the employer is racist, and if he unwittingly agreed to interview a black person who happened to have a white-sounding name - would he be any more likely to hire the black applicant after meeting face-to-face? Or is the interview a painful and discouraging waste of time for the black applicant - that is, an economic penalty of having a white sounding name? Along those same lines, perhaps a black person with a white name pays an economic penatly in the black community; and what of the potential advantage to be gained in the black community by having a distinctively black name? But because the audit studies can't measure the actual life outcomes of the dictious DeShawn Williams versus Jake Williams, they can't assess the broader impact of a distinctively black name.Maybe DeShawn should just change his name.So does a name matter? The data show that, on average, a person with a distinctively black name - whether it is a woman named Imani or a man named DeShawn- does have a worse life outcome than a woman named Molly or a man named Jake. But it isn't the fault of their names. If two black boys, Jake Williams and DeShawn Williams, are born in the same neighborhood and into the same family and economic circumstances, they would likely to have similar life outcomes. But the kind of parents who name their son Jake don't tend to live in the same neighborhoods or share economic circumstances with the kind of parents who name their son DeShawn. And that's why, on average, a boy named Jake will tend to earn more money and get more education than a boy named DeShawn. A DeShawn is more likely to have been handicapped by a low-income, low-education, single parent background. His name is an indicator - not a cause - of his outcome. Just as a child with no books in his home isn't likely to test well in school, a boy named DeShawn isn't likely to do well in life. And what if DeShawn had changed his name to Jake or Connor: would his situation improve? Here's a guess: anybody who bothers to change his name in the name of economic success is - at least highly motivated, and motivation is probably a stronger indicator of success than, well, a name.—It would go very big, but you can get the essence of the impact of names of people on their lives.Source: FreakonomicsI recommend this book to all and to read this full study on parenting and naming children, its just awesome.

Do military members have to pay any fee for leave or fiancee forms?
NOOOOOOO. You are talking to a military romance scammer. I received an email from the US Army that directly answers your question that is pasted below please keep reading.I believe you are the victim of a military Romance Scam whereas the person you are talking to is a foreign national posing as an American Soldier claiming to be stationed overseas on a peacekeeping mission. That's the key to the scam they always claim to be on a peacekeeping mission.Part of their scam is saying that they have no access to their money that their mission is highly dangerous. If your boyfriend girlfriend/future husband/wife is asking you to do the following or has exhibited this behavior, it is a most likely a scam:Moves to private messaging site immediately after meeting you on Facebook or SnapChat or Instagram or some dating or social media site. Often times they delete the site you met them on right after they asked you to move to a more private messaging siteProfesses love to you very quickly & seems to quote poems and song lyrics along with using their own sort of broken language, as they profess their love and devotion quickly. They also showed concern for your health and love for your family.Promises marriage as soon as he/she gets to state for leave that they asked you to pay for. They Requests money (wire transfers) and Amazon, iTune ,Verizon, etc gift cards, for medicine, religious practices, and leaves to come home, internet access, complete job assignments, help sick friend, get him out of trouble, or anything that sounds fishy. The military does provide all the soldier needs including food medical Care and transportation for leave. Trust me, I lived it, you are probably being scammed. I am just trying to show you examples that you are most likely being connned.Below is an email response I received after I sent an inquiry to the US government when I discovered I was scammed. I received this wonderful response back with lots of useful links on how to find and report your scammer. And how to learn more about Romance Scams.Right now you can also copy the picture he gave you and do a google image search and you will hopefully see the pictures of the real person he is impersonating. this doesn't always work and take some digging. if you find the real person you can direct message them and alert them that their image is being used for scamming.Good Luck to you and I'm sorry this may be happening to you. please continue reading the government response I received below it's very informative. You have contacted an email that is monitored by the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command. Unfortunately, this is a common concern. We assure you there is never any reason to send money to anyone claiming to be a Soldier online. If you have only spoken with this person online, it is likely they are not a U.S. Soldier at all. I've been saving $20-$120 a month in a box under my bed for years, and currently have about $20k to buy a car outright. When I go to deposit this money into my bank account, will it cause tax issues or problems later on?
Why oh why oh why??? Please take a class on finance or watch a YouTube video or something! This is wrong in so many ways!First of all, the math tells me you have been doing this for a minimum of 15 years. Assuming some months were not 120 let’s say 83.33/mo for 20 years. I can’t believe you wouldn’t have at least opened a bank account in that time, unless the money was received illegally or you are trying to hide it from the IRS in order to avoid paying taxes.Secondly, why in a box? Even a basic savings account would have provided an extra thousand dollars. Investing it at a nominal 4% rate of return would have given you over 10k! And yes this is compounded interest over 20 years based on $83/mo.Thirdly, why are you spending 20k on a car? That is the worst investment ever. Within a year (depending on the car) you will likely lose a huge portion of money in value, maintenance, and fees for things like registration and insurance. Why not buy something a bit cheaper?Last thing, why pay cash for a car? Interest rates on cars go from 0% - 4% for a majority of people. You could be making more money paying monthly payments while that money is invested elsewhere. To answer your question, they make you fill out a form. It will have zero impact on anything. The government has more to worry about than your 20k.Only time this may come up is if you are trying to get a loan for a large purchase such as a mortgage and the loan company may inquire where the money came from. Likely you would write a note saying you have no investment experience and have no idea how finance works and you saved it in a box.If this makes you angry, good! Maybe you will channel that anger into trying to prove me wrong and by doing so learning how to invest and make money off of your money… or you can ignore this or reply with a snarky comment.

What little-known things should Canadians know about second mortgages?
1. There are different types of second mortgagesWhat exactly is a second mortgage? These loan products come in a couple of different forms. For instance, a revolving HELOC offers the borrower continuous access to equity as they pay off what they previously owe (the principle), much like how a credit card works. This type of loan can also be a closed second mortgage, which means that you get one lump sum of cash from your equity, and gradually pay it down, much like an auto loan.HELOC’s are typically only offered to those in urban areas who have a strong credit profile. If you are experiencing credit challenges or limited income, private mortgages are likely your only option.2. Remember, your home is collateralWhen you take out a second mortgage, you are using your home as collateral to the lender. This means that if you do not pay, the bank has the option to foreclose just as it does with a first mortgage. That said, because you have a physical asset backing your loan, your interest rate will be substantially lower.3. They can be used to avoid PMIWhen you apply for a conventional mortgage, if you do not have 20% to use as a down payment you will be required to obtain private mortgage insurance (PMI). In Canada, this is what we typically refer to as your Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) fees. And they can be quite high!On a $500,000 mortgage loan with 5% down, you will be paying 4% CMHC fees. That’s a total of $19,000!Taking out a second mortgage along with the first mortgage is one way borrowers can avoid PMI. A second mortgage can add a monthly payment to your budget, but can be a cheaper option than PMI.4. There will be some feesSecond mortgages are a great option to keep in mind, but they do come at a price. You’ll need to pay some fees, so be sure to speak with a professional about getting a second mortgage.5. You can use them to consolidate debtBuried in credit card debt? If you have hefty balances on your credit cards or an enormous pile of student loans to pay back, a second mortgage offers you a way to turn all those high monthly payments into one affordable payment and which can be easier to manage vs. multiple payments with disparate due dates. You can get a much lower rate on a second mortgage than your credit cards, so this can save you money in the long run and simplify your monthly debt payments, but even when the rate is the same or higher, you can save on cash flow by reducing your monthly payments Most credit cards require up to 3% of the outstanding balance. So if you are only making your minimums, or even worse, missing them! But you have at least 20%+ equity in your home (or more in a rural location) then this is a key sign you should be looking at utilizing that equity.6. Second mortgages can help with bad creditIf you have bad credit, then borrowing money to consolidate or pay off debt can be challenging. Those with poor credit scores often think obtain a second mortgage is impossible, but ironically, this is likely one of the best tools to help them repair that credit.Gaining access to your equity can allow you to pay off all of those overdue bills, immediately, and give you piece of mind to get your finances back in order.A simpler, single payment setup, can also make it easier to have a single target to hit monthly. Most traditional banks, and even many brokers and alternative lenders, do not offer second mortgages for bad credit borrowers. It’s important to speak with a mortgage professional not tied down by these burdensome restrictions, because second mortgages are possible even with a poor credit score. Canada is filled with lenders to work with, and you need someone who will help you find them.
