Not participating in or not allowing to c0nduct a population census may ultimately harm the people’s objective. A good example is available from India. During late seventies people of the Eastern state of Assam felt that the migrants to the state are taking away job opportunities and depriving the local people of economic development and launched an agitation that continued for a long time. In the situation it was not possible to conduct the 1981 census. However, had the census been conducted in a peaceful atmosphere, the data would have proved the increasing levels of migration into the state and bolstered the claim of those who were agitating.

The teaching staff of my department didn't help me much. Out of 30+ lecturers who have taught me ~50 courses in my 4 years at NITK, only 2 or 3 have genuinely helped me. That limited help was mostly in form of motivation, encouragement, support and appreciation. I received very less technical help from faculty members.This is my last semester at NITK and a lot of times, I have felt that I could have taught the course better than the lecturer. Some of my classmates have more exposure and experience in the subject than the faculty member. A lecturer once confessed openly in classroom that he had no idea about the course he is teaching and that he is doing so only because he has no choice. Such is the state of lecturers in NITK.And I would also like to point out that some faculty members who are secretly active on all social networking websites (including Quora) ensure that students don't write their opinion about them. Basically, there is no way to give feedback and faculty members do not handle negative feedbacks well. You can't even approach a mentor of your choice (even if both the mentor and you have a mutual agreement and interest) because the other faculty members would protest. There is dirty politics and corruption. Some faculty members have proved beyond any doubt that they are sexist and hypocrites.The faculty members have only prevented me from exploring more. They didn't aid my learning rather they prevented me from learning. However, I think this extra struggle helped me. I learnt self-learning. There were few genuinely good lecturers whom I respect and I will forever be indebted to them. The department and the institute is highly understaffed and they are doing the best they can to fill up the positions. It's easy to complain about the problem rather than do something about it. Considering that my education at NITK was highly subsidised, I think the situation wasn't as bad as it sounds. Plus, the situation in most Indian colleges including NITs and IITs isn't much better.I chose to do online courses and found out useful ways to utilise my classroom time effectively.

It wasn’t me, it was DH.DH was active-duty military, which meant he went to the military hospital and saw military docs. He was a Drill Sergeant at Ft Sill, Oklahoma, gone all day, most evenings, often weekends; being On the Trail means never having to say “I’ll be home for supper”. For three years.Near the end of his middle year, he started getting sick. No fever, but nauseated, feeling like absolute crap, abdominal pains. The Family Medicine Clinic doc said “Gall bladder” and sent him off for a HIDA scan with CCK- a fancy way of watching the gallbladder work. Basically, you don’t eat, you go in and they put an IV port in you, then send you off to eat a nice, fatty meal- we chose burger and fries. Back at the scanning lab, they injected some chemicals and laid DH out under a huge metal pancake with a monitor attached. We watched as particles moved mostly this way, and some few that. Results were read by the Family doc- not gallstones, but, rather, his gallbladder didn’t work. He was sent up to the Surgery docs.But our surgeon, a Captain, didn’t believe the scan results- too unusual, he said. Can’t be it. By now, DH is vomiting daily, losing weight and turning an alarming shade of yellow. His bili count never went above three, but three is high enough- should be near enough zero to make no difference. The surgeon kicked him back downstairs, this time to Internal Medicine.Internal Medicine took a look, said “Gallbladder” and sent him to the surgeons. The Captain said, “Nope”, and sent him back downstairs. This went on for a year, with DH continuing to lose weight, feel like crap warmed over and vomiting all the time; every doctor that looked at him said gallbladder- except the surgeon. It was miserable.Then one doc gave him a script for a smooth muscle tissue relaxant, sublingual. I cannot remember the drug’s name, but I remember it worked like a charm. He could take one of those and feel almost normal for the rest of the day. Good stuff; DH was living on those things. The Captain got tired of seeing him, though, and so sent him to Brook- the Army Medical Center in San Antonio Texas. That lasted a month, and they scoped DH from stem to stern, including two more HIDA scans, a sinus scan, liver biopsy and a digestion timing study. DH is seven minutes slow digesting food. He was also still yellow, which fascinated the Brooks docs- they got daily bili counts. DH got sick of it all, signed himself out while being told his Commander would be informed (to which DH said, “Good- he called me yesterday to ask when I would be back online!”) and came home. The surgeon finally said, fine, he’d remove DH’s gallbladder.Day of surgery came, DH was scheduled mid-morning, but the way that hospital ran, he didn’t go in until nearly 3 in the afternoon. By the time he got to his room, it was suppertime, and the nurse asked the surgeon if she should get DH a tray. Surgeon said, “Yes, but he’ll probably vomit it back up.” I pulled out our handy-dandy prescription bottle of magical pills and said, “I brought these.” Surgeon replied, “Those won’t work anymore with his gallbladder gone!”Now wait a second. If the pills worked when you swore it wasn’t his gallbladder, why won’t they work just because you’ve taken his gallbladder? That makes no sense. Not to mention, it is because of you not believing actual laboratory tests- the surgeon once said to me, “I can send you down there and it would probably say your gallbladder was bad, too!”- that it has taken a year and a half to get his gallbladder removed, him being dog-sick nearly every damned day of it. You know what? Thank you for puncturing the holes in his abdomen and removing that little sack of tissue, but just go away now- your work here is more than done.And he’s had no trouble like that ever since.But, remind me to tell you about his brush with kidney cancer- THAT was another good one.

Theoretically, it is possible. You just need to apply for a permit from the police before you start. How easy is it to get the permit is anybody’s guess.A lot of people, fearing their applications being denied by the police, prefer what many people call “Taking a Stroll”. So people usually organize through the social media, agreeing on a preset time and location. Then they all take a “stroll” together in front of the building of whichever govt agency that they protest against. It is hard for the police to act before there is no law prohibiting people from taking a leisure walk together, right? Especially these people don’t carry any banners or posts with them.In this kind of peaceful “strolls”, police usually just watch or sometimes police would ask the strollers to walk away and not block the traffic. If the strollers refuse to comply, it is possible that the police would forcibly remove the strollers from the street and violent protesters could be locked up for several days and then released.The number of people participating in such strolls could range from a few hundreds who were complaining about a greedy real estate developer tearing down a neighborhood garden, to hundreds and thousands, such as the “strolls” in the cities of Xiamen, Dalian and Kuming (XDK) that protest against the construction of “toxic” chemical plants in their cities. In the case of XDK, the call for a stroll on the weekend just went viral on Internet and half of the city showed up, with parents bringing the children to join the “walk”. There were, however, cases of organizers of citywide taxi strikes being arrested and sentenced to serve terms in prison. So I guess the caveat here is that do not show any signs of being structured, organized and coordinated. The government usually doesn’t tolerate any forms of organization hostile to it.So, YES, people are allowed to protest in China. According to a statistics from China Academy of Social Sciences, there are about 180K protests in China each year - that is around 500 protests per day! And, NO, people are not protesting to get “democracy and freedom”. They protest because of very specific things and for their own personal interests.Lastly, it is the local governments that deal with protests. Since the number of protests is a key metric in the performance evaluation of the local government officials (because of the emphasis on Harmony), local government officials are actually quite fearful of the protesters. The officials usually want to end the protests as quickly as possible, without any violence. Any violence could cause the whole thing to escalate, spreading through Internet. Very bad for any officials looking to further his career in the govt. They simply don’t want to be under national spotlight.

Trust me, I lived it, you are probably being scammed. I was talking to a far-off relative who recently immigrated to Canada. She immigrated from Dubai, where she was living with her husband and kids. Worked as a government employee in Dubai, with all the perks that an Indian household is used to. She went on about how Dubai compares with Canada, how life was so much easier in Dubai, how there are no good restaurants to eat at here in Canada, and how difficult it will be to keep her kids “within the culture” after moving here. You could see a cloud of entitlement around her, if you are a Canadian that is. She went on about how difficult it was to get her PR in the first place, how many sleepless nights she had waiting for it, and she deserves a good life here after waiting so long to get here. I asked how long it took from start to finish, and she said “Oh, it took a full 9 MONTHS!”.20 years ago, when I was a kid, I remembered my parents thinking and discussing whether we should move to Canada. We were living in Africa at the time, there was no internet and resources were scarce. At that time, you would request an application package from the Canadian Embassy and they would send the package by mail to you to fill out and send back. We waited for weeks, hoping that our mail signNowed them and that the application package would not be lost in transit to us.When the application package finally arrived, we knew we couldn't jump on the form, we had but one package of forms to work with. So, my dad took the form to a photocopier shop several kilometres away and got a bunch of copies taken. The shopkeeper was quite happy having received such good unexpected business from us. Next up was filling the form. Tech-savvy folks that we were, we figured we should type it up. My mom's typing skills came in handy - she felt she was destined to do this. My mom and I would trek every day to a typing school a few kilometres away and I would watch my mom roll up the papers into the typewriter and type up the answers exactly within the field. We brought white-out bottles with us for correcting the inevitable errors.After all of that, several reviews, and making sure we dotted all our I's, after praying for our golden application package's safe transit, we mailed it off to the embassy. After a full 7 months, we got a mail telling us that our application was received and we need further documentation to be submitted.We did all that they asked. Every year when the school started, my parents would tell me, no point enrolling you, we are leaving for Canada soon. One month in, they would know it's not happening and would enrol me in. All my schoolmates knew I would leave for Canada, but that never was happening. They would joke that I was bluffing, that I was never going to leave.Then one day, we got our confirmations in the mail. After 5 years. After several calls, mails, one scary interview in Delhi and a lot of agonizing wait. How did it feel? I don't know about my parents, but I was in a trance. My parents probably felt a huge relief of gaining certainty in life, but also felt a huge surge of new uncertainty about a new chapter in life. Will they succeed there? Will we survive there? Will all be ok?My dad ended up working as a general labourer for several months, my mom too, after coming here. They didn't want us kids to feel anything, so they were super casual about it. But, it didn't escape us for one second that my father who was the head of R&D in India, and my mother who was a bank employee, were doing all these for us, for us to have a good life. It grounded us, put our feet firmly on the floor, and taught us to do whatever is necessary, for the people we love.Canada gave us a lot, we lost a lot too. My mom passed away before she could see us succeed here and my dad became a single parent unexpectedly. But, in the end , perhaps it was alright that we came here. I would have been a different person if I didn't come here. I would not have known what hard work meant may be, what being responsible meant, what being humble and modest means, what kind of person I wanted to be. Or maybe I would have been the same person wherever I was, I wouldn't know.As to my relative, she is back in Dubai now, claiming Child Tax Benefits for her three kids from here and living it up over there. Yes, she is perhaps “luckier” than me in life, but I feel I'm lucky too, just differently.

I was selected for a summer internship 2016.I tried to be very open while filling the preference form: I choose many products as my favorite products and I said I'm open about the team I want to join.I even was very open in the  location and start date to get host matching interviews (I negotiated the start date in the interview until both me and my host were happy.) You could ask your recruiter to review your form (there are very cool and could help you a lot since they have a bigger experience).Do a search on the potential team.Before the interviews,  try to find smart question that you are going to ask for the potential host (do a search on the team  to find nice and deep questions to impress your host). Prepare well your resume.You are very likely not going to get algorithm/data structure questions like in the first round. It's going to be just some friendly chat if you are lucky. If your potential team is working on something like machine learning, expect that  they are going to ask you questions about machine learning, courses related to machine learning you have and relevant experience (projects, internship). Of course you have to study that before the interview. Take as long time as you need if you feel rusty. It takes some time to get ready for the host matching (it's less than the technical interview)  but it's worth it of course.
