What are some good practices for a PhD student to cultivate?
I think my best habit as a grad student is hoarding all of my research notes. Every graduate student has nightmares that while writing their dissertation, they'll have forgotten how to derive a certain property and won't be able to retrace their steps, rendering them a complete and utter failure in life. This system is intended to prevent that scenario and minimize time spent redoing work you've already done.Step 1: Annotate all your notes with project, date, and page number. Yes, I know my handwriting is terrible. That's not the point. Take notes at all your meetings and during your independent work, even if it's just scribbles. Trust me, your advisor will never tell you that you're writing too much down. I've also found writing to be very helpful when my task for the day is "think about X". It can be so easy to sit and do nothing all day, under the guise of "thinking". My personal policy is if it isn't written down, it didn't happen. Step 2: Track your notes and progress. I make myself fill out a sheet like this every work day to make sure I'm staying on track. It's useful for identifying goals you did and didn't meet on a daily basis, and doubles nicely as a cover-sheet for scanning notes. (This isn't great for tracking long-term goals, which I manage with a separate system.)Meetings and tasks get filled out the morning or the night before. Hours worked and notes get recorded as the day goes on. Step 3: SCAN ALL THE THINGS! This is what my "notes" folder looks like. I used to scan daily, but lately I'm doing 1-week batches of notes. You basically want to store notes at the granularity that you can recall your research. Step 4: FILE ALL THE THINGS! I'm currently at 9 large binders for about 2 years of thesis research. You don't necessarily need the physical copies if you've scanned everything, but sometimes scanned notes are a bit hard-to-read. Besides, you can never have too many backups of your thesis materials, preferably with independent failure points. Step 5: Profit/graduate? Fingers crossed.

What materials are good for studying third semester physics (4C)? I am learning fluids, light and optics, waves, etc. Should I use AP Physics B books to study?
I particularly like the introductory physics texts by Giancoli. It is now in its 7th edition; I recommend you get 4th or 5th edition; they are just as good, but they are very cheap on Amazon used. That's the real key: buy very old editions of the classic texts (Halliday & Resnick is another great series). You'll be amazed at how cheap they become. All too often when professors inform the book store about the book they want, they have to fill in a line for "which edition". Almost always they choose "latest". That's why the book companies keep coming out with new editions; to undermine the used-book sales. But you can take advantage of this undermining by buying old editions incredibly cheap. Don't fret over not having the solutions. If you are not confident that you have solved a problem correctly, then you probably haven't. If that is the situation, it is not helpful to look at the solution, because then you will learn only how to solve that particularly problem, not the class of problems that it typifies. If you can't satisfy yourself that you can find the right answer, or don't know where to start, the very very best step to take is to visit your professor or graduate student instructor during office hours. Moreover, going to those office hours you are likely to meet someone else struggling to work the material. The best way to study is this: work really hard trying to solve the problem. If you fail, then find someone else. Don't ask, "How do you do this?" Instead describe your approach. Ask, it that the way you would do it? Do that, and your friend does much more than give you the answer. He may correct your mistakes, your misimpression, your misevaluations of the physics and how to use it.Find such a friend and you'll discover that you can often help him as much as he helps you.

If tomorrow you wake up as the only living person on earth, with everything else still intact, with you in power and control and owning the entire world, what would you do and could you survive to die a natural death at an old age?
I can’t think of much else that could be a more depressing and pointless scenario. Then again without the absolute knowledge that there is no other living person, and despite there appearing to be no other person alive, I would probably find that hard to believe!.I would start looking for someone else!As the days, months, possibly years went by, and my search is in vain, so I might start to dispair. Even if there is other human life on the planet they obviously are few and far between, without knowledge of radio transmitting, and pretty well unfindable. The planet turns out to be huge, vast, enormous. A million people could live on it and I’d never find them in a life time of traveling. Unless I got lucky. But I won’t, will I?Fed up of driving endless miles though empty terrain I decide to stay put and build a whacking great bonfire. I expend all effort and energy on keeping it alive, burning and Smokey, in the hope that one day some one will see it.This would be a bizarre, mad form of solitary confinement, which notoriously drives people insane.Eventually I give up hope and top myself.Long and short of it.

What are the steps to making my own etsy shop?
How to set up an Etsy shop like a boss. It's pretty straightforward to start an Etsy shop, but there's definitely a learning curve. Especially if you've never used an e-commerce marketplace to sell something before. The first time I tried setting up a seller account, I had actually already (mostly) created the Etsy API-driven beeswaxwebsites.com, and I wanted to get a better feel for how Etsy sellers were initially onboarded into the marketplace. I was a little surprised that the process of setting up a shop and creating listings wasn't more user friendly. There are certainly some necessary hoops to jump through, such as associating a credit card with your account, but you end up navigating through a few counterintuitive pages to have what I'd consider to be a "complete and working" profile. What I see a lot from Etsy sellers just starting out is that they list just an item or two, and do minimal work with item photography, and do a cursory item description. These listings tend to get sub-optimal traffic because they haven't been keyworded and tagged appropriately, the shop lacks "reputation", the listing description is not descriptive, and the photographs look (sorry to say it) ugly. They set prices that are generally too low for the amount of work and capital they put into their items. Sellers may also not have a shop avatar and seller avatar ready for upload when they make their account, and they lack the resources to make a good shop banner. Here's how to fix some of those rookie problems and start Etsying like a pro.Start with the basicsMake sure your shop announcements is filled out with a welcome message.Write out some shop policies that you know you can stick to. Are you willing to accept returns? After how many days? What about international shipping? Custom orders?Fill out your shop's about page with some sexy, sexy content. And pictures!!List a couple of items. You can add more later! How to find your Shop statsClick on the "Your Shop" icon in the header bar, click "Click Links", and "Stats".This will tell you how many views your shop has gotten, and where those views came from. You can get an even more finely tuned idea of your shop traffic by setting up Google Analytics (see below). How (and why) to set up Google AnalyticsGoogle Analytics is a nice add-on to your Etsy SEO management strategy, because it tells you not only where your traffic came from, but also gives you some access to the user data such as what search terms the visitor used before they clicked the link to your shop, and your visitor demographics. Here's the Etsy guidance on setting up Google Analytics: To add your Etsy shop to your existing Google Analytics account:Log in to your Google account.Create a new website profile.Create and record a new tracking ID. Sign in to Etsy and go to Your shop > Shop settings > Options > Web Analytics.Enter your Google Analytics Web Property ID in this format: UA-XXXXXXX-X.Click Save.Learn more about setting up Google Analytics. It all depends on your preferred marketing channels. If you feel like Google is the way to go, concentrate on optimizing yourself for those kinds of searches. Google Trends is a smart place to start.https://www.google.com/trends/http://keywordtool.io/ is a good alternative to Google's Adwords keyword planner, which you can use for free. How to test Etsy for good keywordsWith Etsy you can use some really cool tools based on their public API to test how well your content and tags will compete within your chosen category. My favorite one of the bunch is Marmalead.com, which is run by a cool guy named Richie Peplin . It's a freemium model, but you can get a lot done without paying a red cent.Important things to know about keywords and Etsy:You get 140 characters in your listing title. Don't be afraid to use all of them, and don't worry about being ungrammatical. Ungrammatical is the name of the game on Etsy. You get 13 tags for your listing. Don't be a n00b. Avail yourself of every last one of them.Make the first 20 or so characters in your listing title and the first 100 or so characters in your item description be the most important. That's all anyone will see in "search", so choose wisely.Pricing your stuffIt's an almost universal disease of newer Etsy sellers to try to price their stuff as low as possible, and cut the bottom out of the market. This is unwise for several reasons:It's (a little) easier to lower prices through sales and coupon codes, than it is to raise prices once you have an established customer base. You can never compete on Alibaba's playing field, so change the rules of the game. Alibaba can never compete on things made with love and care. Capitalize on that, not price. You have to keep the lights on. Decide whether this is a hobby or a business, and price accordingly.Etsy provides a good pricing formula if you're starting from scratch.https://blog.etsy.com/en/2012/a-...Here’s my favorite formula:Materials + Labor + Expenses + Profit = Wholesale x 2 = RetailI picked this up from the amazing Megan Auman. What I love about this formula is that your profit is properly accounted for!You can also find analytical tools for pricing distribution in the Etsy Apps Gallery.https://www.etsy.com/apps/Resources: https://www.reddit.com/r/Etsy/co...https://www.etsy.com/seller-hand...https://blog.etsy.com/en/2012/a-...https://ifttt.com/etsy (connect Etsy to IFTTT) http://banner.fotor.com/banner-m... How do I become a highly rated eBay seller fast?
There are two major keys to success and each one follows the other.Learn and understand the eBay ranking algorithm. An over-simplified explanation is that price doesn’t matter. What matters is engagement. How long do users look at your listing? How long do they engage with your listing? Do people buy your listing and watch your listing more than they do the other similar listings. Lowest price isn’t always the winner.Use price psychology. Retailers like Amazon and Walmart use price psychology all day. So should you. Use price psychology to make the buyer feel like they made a good decision.Bonus: Follows the eBay guidelines and rules. Keep your account in good standing. Keep your customers happy and write off problems as losses and move on to the next sale.I’ll summarize some of what I know works…You want to litter your listings with eye-grabbing RED text and red icons. The more red shows up on your listings the more the viewer thinks he/she’s getting a deal. eBay has built in tools just for this. Take advantage of them.1. Mark Down Your Listings Using Price Anchoring TacticsThis tactic is sales 101. You’ve seen it everywhere. Retailers can’t live without anchoring. There is a crossed out original or list price followed by a sale or discount price. It makes the buyer believe they are getting a deal by anchoring the price of the item to a value higher than they are paying. You should be discounting ALL your items using the markdown manager on eBay. Just raise the price by X% and then run a markdown campaign for x% and like magic your listing now looks like this one… Anchoring in full effect at 10% off.2. Create ScarcityIn Robert Cialdini’s book “Influence: The Psycology of Persuasion”, one of his main principles is “Scarcity”. It’s basic supply and demand. If a user thinks the item is rare, they will not hesitate to buy it, even at a greater price. They do not want to miss out.To create scarcity on eBay, it is quite simple as eBay does all the work for you. All you have to do is change the quantity available on an item that you have previously sold to 1. Thats’s it. eBay will make your item bleed in red like this by adding a big red triangle AND “Only 1 left!“ on your listing.3. Sell More And Age Your Listing with Social ProofIf you sell the same item often, don’t ever cancel your listings. Instead, keep re-using the same listing by replenishing the quantity. Keep your listings aged and alive. The more you sell on a single listing, the more social proof eBay applies to your listing and the higher you rank in the search results.4. Bonus Points: FAST N’ FREEIf your eBay business model allows you to use the “Fast ‘n Free” feature on eBay, do it! You will crush your competition if your eBay listing has the FastNFree icon and has all the bleeding RED icons and text eBay lets you have.I had to scroll through over 150 items to find this one gem that was applying Anchoring, Scarcity, Social Proof, and FAST ‘N FREE all at once.I wrote about this and eBay’s algorithm here:How To Make Your eBay Listings Pop (With Bold Red Text)How eBay's Best Match Search Algorithm Works (How To Beat It)

Do recessions cause prices to increase or decrease?
Think of your store or restaurant as an economy or a sector of an economy. Then out of nowhere, a carnival comes to town and steps up right down the street. Think of this has the boom period, as new people are coming in your store for business. You don't know how to interpret this, so in turn you have to hire new people to keep up with the inflow of orders. You have to order new supplies and ingredients to keep up with the volume of orders, which in turn increases prices for the raw materials and other materials in your restaurant (as all prices in a price coordinated economy are interrelated). Then all of a sudden, the carnival leaves. This begins the retraction of the business in your store. Or rather we call this the bust period or "recession." There are a couple of things you now have to do as you are now over budget. You have to get rid of some people or either decrease some hours. You have to lower prices to offset the missing demand so customers will have an incentive to shop in your store. The fact that you are ordering less and less ingredients or supplies will bid down the raw materials of those supplies and ingredients. This will cause the prices of said materials to drop down to more affordable levels. In short, recessions causes prices to fall. The recovery is to fill the void and to find a new way to allocate those resources properly. Recessions occur when there is a mis-allocation of resources, not when there is a fall short of demand. People do not need a reason to spend money, as demand is virtually endless. If customers are not buying, there is most likely a reason why.

How do you get your app promoted in the Apple App Store?
Hey there!Apple doesn’t pick up apps for Today tab randomly. We at AppFollow made an analysis of what those apps and games have in common and found some patterns that can help you to better understand what your game or app needs to increase its chances of being featured:1. App monetization: two-thirds of the apps and games chosen for the Today tab are either paid apps or ones with in-app purchases;2. Average rating and app reviews: Apps with a rating of lower than four stars are rarely considered by Apple for featuring;3. Universal apps: App availability not only for iPhone but other Apple devices as iPad and Apple Watch is considered a big advantage by Apple’s editors. How to fill out an Apple featuring requestAll you need to do is to fill in the special Apple request form and have a bit of luck. You can give information about the app itself, and also announce a new release. The App Store has three tabs with the featured apps: Today, Apps and Games. Which tab your app is going to be in is up to the Apple Review team to decide. You just need to fill out the request. We have gathered the links to the forms in this article. When filling out the form, pay attention to the Your Story section. You don’t need to talk about the functionality of your app here. Talk about how it can improve people’s daily life and their routines; for example, how people will be happier and much calmer if they use your yoga app, or how you have come up with a completely new gameplay mechanics that are used in your game — talk more about things like that. How to prepare for getting featuredApple will consider your request for two weeks. Meanwhile, you can use this time to get your app ready to be featured. For instance, renew marketing materials (icon, screenshot, texts, preview videos) and perform load testing, so that a sudden increase in the number of users won’t affect the performance of the app.In order not to miss your app being included in a collection AppFollow gives a unique opportunity for letting you know about your upcoming featuring the night before, at around 2:00 PM GMT. All you need to do is set up Slack notifications. So gear up and be well prepared to meet featuring head-on.Learn more about how to get featured in the App Store on our blog

Why does Starbucks require employees to ring in cups of water?
I can think of a couple of reasons. - It takes labor to fill the cup, and after recovering from the economic crash, Starbucks had been meticulously tracking every metric it can track (for better or worse.) It pays to know how much money you're spending on labor to fill water cups in each store, and to track the materials used to do so. You can also track seasonal highs, daily fluctuations, etc. - It provides a valid reason for the person making drinks to tell the requester to 'go order in line.' You'd be surprised how many people cut the out-the-door line to ask the guy making drinks for "just a cup of water." It might be 'just' a cup to you, but it's a huge disruption to everyone else who waited before you.
