I would ask the high school you are applying to for guidelines. They should be able to specify who is qualified to write the letter.If you are indeed allowed to ask your 7th grade teacher, ask them if they can write you a strong, positive letter recommending your admission into the school. This should allow them to be honest on whether they can write you a letter that will be helpful, rather than detrimental.Good luck!

Departments of education and school districts always have to make decisions about what to include in their curriculum.  There are a lot of life skills that people need that aren't taught in school.  The question is should those skills be taught in schools?I teach high school, so I'll talk about that.  The typical high school curriculum is supposed to give students a broad-based education that prepares them to be citizens in a democracy and to be able to think critically.  For a democracy to work, we need educated, discerning citizens with the ability to make good decisions based on evidence and objective thought.  In theory, people who are well informed about history, culture, science, mathematics, etc., and are capable of critical, unbiased thinking, will have the tools to participate in a democracy and make good decisions for themselves and for society at large.  In addition to that, they should be learning how to be learners, how to do effective, basic research, and collaborate with other people.  If that happens, figuring out how to do procedural tasks in real life should not provide much of a challenge.  We can't possibly teach every necessary life skill people need, but we can help students become better at knowing how to acquire the skills they need.  Should we teach them how to change a tire when they can easily consult a book or search the internet to find step by step instructions for that?  Should we teach them how to balance a check book or teach them how to think mathematically and make sense of problems so that the simple task of balancing a check book (which requires simple arithmetic and the ability to enter numbers and words in columns and rows in obvious ways) is easy for them to figure out.  If we teach them to be good at critical thinking and have some problem solving skills they will be able to apply those overarching skills to all sorts of every day tasks that shouldn't be difficult for someone with decent cognitive ability  to figure out.  It's analogous to asking why a culinary school didn't teach its students the steps and ingredients to a specific recipe.  The school taught them about more general food preparation and food science skills so that they can figure out how to make a lot of specific recipes without much trouble.  They're also able to create their own recipes.So, do we want citizens with very specific skill sets that they need to get through day to day life or do we want citizens with critical thinking, problem solving, and other overarching cognitive skills that will allow them to easily acquire ANY simple, procedural skill they may come to need at any point in their lives?

There have already been some great answers so there is no point in repeating what others have said. I will add that if you are applying to highly selective schools mid-year grades can be one way of sweeping through those on the cusp and cutting people out. Remember that with highly selective schools virtually all the students who apply have great grades. A  grade of C in a class can be enough to move someone down from what was an offer to a wait list or deny. A bunch of B's instead of A's can do the same thing. In addition, many colleges look at "school groups" prior to letting decisions go in regular decision. A school group is a computer list of all students who have applied from a particular secondary school usually put in order by rank in class or gpa.(School groups are most often large from schools that are deemed the best secondary schools across the country and world.Many of the students apply to the same set of selective colleges.  And some colleges do not want to extend too many offers to students from any particular school.) If the gpa of a student who was on the cusp falls even just a little bit below someone on the wait list, an admission officer may move the student down (and sometimes the other student up) in order to give the decisions a certain consistency within the group as a whole. This is not always true but it does happen. I have sat in on meetings with students whose grades have fallen off the cliff at the end of senior year who have to make a pitch as to why their offers should not be rescinded. Those who do not have dramatic circumstances usually end up in tears. We used to run studies of students whose grades had slipped; it was pretty clear that they had taken a mental vacation the second semester of senior year (even if they did not do terribly gradewise), and many of those students ended up doing not all that well in their first semester and this then had a snowball effect and they didn't do all that well over 4 years. Putting academics on a low priority for half a year and then having a relatively fun summer makes kick starting off well among a group of talented students much harder than if a student works all the way through until graduation.

I have not gotten such terrible grades in high school but I know many of my students who have.Well, some of them are doing perfectly fine in their lives today. Decent job and and family. Some of them are also struggling today, having a hard time providing for their individual family.The conclusion is, grades are not the deciding factor on how our lives will turn out in the future. Mostly it is our attitude towards life.Have a great life ahead!

If you want to improve your grades, first focus on learning. While learning and grades are not equivalent, those who stress over grades sometimes get worse grades because they do the wrong things trying to get there.Some of this is already known to you, but I like to always state the obvious just in case.Listen in class.Listen intently. Listen actively. Try to rephrase what was just said in a way that makes sense to you. Ask questions.Do all assignments.Every single one. Every single problem. No exceptions.Apply what you've learned.Constantly try to apply what you've just learned to situations in your life. You'll be amazed how much more you can remember this way. This also deepens your understanding and helps you answer higher level questions about that topic.Figure out what you know, and what you don't know. Once you realize what you don't know... figure it out.One difficulty for some is figuring out what they don't know. Can you take a definition and rephrase it in your own words? If not, you don't understand it. Can you name several examples and counterexamples? If not, you don't understand it.Once you realize what you don't know, be relentless until you figure it out. Check your notes, Wikipedia, and hound your teacher until you understand it. If your teacher doesn't explain things well, find one that does.Study for all major assessments.Make flash cards. Write hypothetical test questions and answer them. Make up songs or sayings to help memorize complicated things. Go through your notes and make "notes notes." (Take notes commenting on what you've learned.) If you can't answer questions on your own without looking things up, you're not ready.Learn your teacher.Teachers all have a style. Learn their style. Learn the questions they like to ask, and the answers that they expect. This is similar to learning to please a boss. You learn what the boss wants, and you give it to them.Befriend your teacher.Teachers are human. Grading is subjective (sometimes.) Getting to know the teacher and getting on their good side can't hurt. They are going to be more willing to help you if you are in their good graces. This doesn't even require "sucking up." Just be kind, engage them in conversation occasionally, and generally make their life better. Make your presence known in a good way.Relax. (Especially before tests.)You do want to study for exams and quizzes, but too much studying and worrying can be counterproductive. You want to make sure and get sleep and not be stressed on the day of major exams. Have a routine that gives you good feelings on the day of a major test. Eat food you like. Listen to a certain song. Be confidentI'm sure there is more, but if you do these things I would be very surprised if your grades didn't improve if you take even half of these recommendations to heart.

Even better than pure repetition would be to paraphrase, or pick out the main points of what they’ve just learnt and say it to themselves.Participate in discussionsUnfortunately discussion groups at high school can be quite distracting, meaning they aren’t a normal part of classroom life. But you can talk to your child about what they’ve learnt today. If you don’t understand it – even better!
