Am I the only combat medic to answer this so far?Yes you can. Medics are taught how to but not instructed to. There is a terrible and fine line out there in “the suck” that medics, and medics alone, are asked to walk.You don’t end a person’s life. Full stop. In the rare case that a soldier is mortally wounded (no way to maintain an airway or control bleeding and no higher medical assets within a reasonable time)… then a medic could administer an extra ampule of or two. Even though the doctors and instructors teach the medics this, in the end it’s on that one person’s shoulders. And conscience.Is it better to leave your friend/co-worker screaming in agony until they are too weak to yell? Then watch them convulse every few minutes for a couple of hours. Then finally they stop responding to your voice or even painful stimulus.Brain death is setting in. It takes a few minutes or a few days.Every minute you have a seriously wounded soldier in your unit you have medics that are out of the fight. You also have a much more complicated command situation. Nobody (NOBODY) makes this decision lightly. They also never talk about it.In the movies there is always an EVAC helicopter with escort available and ready to risk anything to get to the wounded. In combat it’s not always possible. “Birds” get grounded for many reasons and MEDEVAC Strykers are delayed by the need for escort vehicles/crews and IED laden roads. In almost all cases, the wounded will live to see the operating room. In some form.Combat wounded are intense. Gunfire is still raging in many cases. People are yelling, confusion is everywhere. The medic will be well trained but under a lot of stress. They know that they have to address breathing and bleeding in 2–3 minutes. They also need to avoid causing further injury and find any hidden wounds. While doing this they have to coordinate any available soldiers with combat lifesaver training to assist them with this or other injured. Finally, they also have to constantly keep the command apprised of the situation.Who has X injury?Can they return to the fight?Do they need to be evacuated from battle or can we take them with us?If they need to go NOW, how long do they realistically have?Can we ground evac through the combat or do we need a bird?While answering all of that the medic has assessed the wounded. Tried to control the bleeding and established a secure airway. Then they need to find a vein for an IV (super hard on a patient with blood loss or missing limbs). While doing this they also need to fill out the ‘9 Line’ medical evacuation form for the radio. Once this is done the medic will check the field dressings, the IV, the breathing. Record the wounds and vitals. Mark when/if was given (how much, when, where administered) and done so that the surgeon can see it and blood doesn’t wash it away. Often in black sharpie on the forehead if patient is unconscious- as awful as that sounds it works well.So, don’t talk about the morality of this until you walk a mile (or 26) in a medic’s boots. Don’t talk about what happens until you live and work with a small team of men and women in a combat zone for over a year at a time. Infantry units are closer than most marriages/families. Your platoon SGT is dad and doc is mom. It’s a horrific moment to see one of your guys literally torn in half and dying. It’s much worse to know that due to a sandstorm there aren’t any flights that day. It’s hell on earth when you realize nobody is coming by road because of the IED you just hit. It’s unimaginable when you realize you only have 2 ampules left and 3 critically wounded friends.I didn’t have to make the hardest choice. I wouldn’t tell you if I did. I sure as &$*# wouldn’t take any judgement from you in any case.Great question. I hope someone who actually held this responsibility in combat can clear it up a little.

I had my class 2 medical assessment done in Kolkata last year-which I cleared with ease-and I would love to share my experience.The entire process takes a lot of time, which ensures a very long answer, but with that being said I can promise you with all the minor details, be patient and have a good read. But first some common questions which most people may ask in the comments and I won't be available to reply for another 1 year.When to apply?The best time is to apply a year before you plan to start flying. That means you must apply for it during your summer vacations if you plan to start flying right after your 12th standard. Or you can very well lose an academic year if you plan to do it after your 12th results are out.Will my medical condition/ problem cause any problem?That is the very reason these tests exist, to get assessed if your condition is a problem!Does wearing glasses mean disqualification?No. Take me for instance I have -1.75 and -2.00 diopter corrective lenses on the left and right eye respectively and I was cleared to “exercise the privileges of my license” wearing my glasses.Is having a class 2 mandatory in order to get a class 1?Yes, indeed. Class 2 is the initial assessment and your registration as a pilot in DGCA. Without a class 2 you won't get your PMR, Pilot Medical Report number which is mandatory in order to apply for class 1.Can my family doctor give me a class 2 medical certificate?Unfortunately not. It can only be provided by a handful of doctors certified by DGCA for the purpose.Can I go for flight training without these certificates?You can start flying with a class 2 medical certificate but you can't get a commercial pilot license or a job without a class 1. It is always a wise idea to get class too before you pay the hefty fees with a class 2 only to be disqualified when it comes to class 1.Most people tend to disqualify themselves and overcomplicate their situation/medical condition without even getting assessed. It is my humble request, no matter what go ahead with the assessment.I am not a doctor or proficient in aviation medicine to comment if you will be cleared to fly on your first attempt.If you have any medical condition, it only ensures additional testing and it being mentioned in your certificate, disqualification is rare and only prominent in extreme cases.There are cases where even the most experienced Captains are deemed “temporary unfit to fly”. Don't worry it is very common and I was nearly a victim too.Step - 1: Fix an appointmentYou need to visit DGCA's website and search for the medical and class 2 medical examiners under it. A PDF will be downloaded with the list of doctors, certified by DGCA. The list is divided into 4 sections namely East, West, North and South. Just need to call any doctor you will be comfortable with. They will initiate the process by briefing you over the call and fixing an appointment whenever you are free.Please use a desktop or laptop for this purpose, government websites are not optimized for mobile handsets. The website you need to visit is dgca.nic.inStep - 2: Initial testsI might have told that only DGCA registered doctors are allowed to do the assessments, but a majority of the tests involved are to be done at your local hospital provided the departments have NABL or NABH accreditation. You must carry the reports to the doctor who will do your class 2 assessment. However NABL/NABH accreditation are provided for individual departments, not the entire hospital. Only the reports bearing NABLOr NABH logo are valid. They must have one.These tests to be done are divided into these departments. The reports are valid only for 4 weeks.RadiologyYou need to get an x-ray of your chest, both mastoids and sinuses. The x-ray film won't have these logos, but the reports with the doctor's comments, enclosing the film must.Mammography and UGC lower abdomenOnly applicable for female applicants, I don't have much idea about it but it is x-ray and UGC based.Pure tone audiogramYour hearing will be tested with various frequencies of sound as well as bone conduction of sound. It must bear the logos as well.BloodYou must do these with an empty stomach, blood TC, DC, ESR, Hb% and grouping with Rh. But if your BMI is 25 and above, you need to do more tests, namely blood sugar with fasting and PP after 75 gm or oral glucose load, HBA1C, T3, T4, TSH and lipid profile. Again the logos are mandatory.UrineR/E, M/E with comments on specific gravity, sugar, protein and microscopic elements. The logos are mandatory.ECGPerhaps with the recent trend high BMI and heart problem are way too common. You might get the comments sinus followed by comments like trachaecardia. The term sinus itself means normal heat but trachaecardia means more beats than normal, so make sure you are relaxed before you go for ECG. Again the logos are much neededENT and eyeThese reports won't have the logos of accreditation, non existent, so instead the doctor's name, qualification, medical registration number and attestation of youe signature by the doctor is needed.For ENT, the doctor just has to check and comment your ear, nose and throat is normal or abnormalFor eyes, there are just two mandatory tests with the rest being stated if possible, they will be done by the class 2 examiner too.First is colour perception test and you must clear this or you will be rechecked by Martin's lamp test.The second and perhaps the one most of you might be curious about is distant vision. Don't worry you will be checked with the prescription glasses you need and you need to score 6/6.DocumentsYou must carry at least 16 passport sized photographs with your name and birth date printed below, original as well as xerox of class 10 pass certificate with marksheet, verification papers from board not needed, original and xerox of birth certificate and the rest are subjected to availability.Have a look at the document your class 2 doctor will email you.Step - 3 : AssessmentIt is the phase when you finally get to meet the doctoe doing your class 2 medical assessment. Most tests, they tend not to tell you why they are doing so just to ensure you can't fake it. But I will mention a fewColour vision testNear vision test for at least N-5 category.The other eye tests mentioned as “if possible” in the image above.Overall posture.Clubbing of nails to check for lung disorders.Blood pressure.Cardiovascular capacity.Time for heart rate to return to normal after 3 minutes of jogging.Dental records will be kept too, defects and decays won' effect the assessment result.And the phase below, which you must know now or you will end getting embarrassed and shockedHeight and weight check while being nude.If you are a male check of testacles, foreskin and the penis.If you are female check of the labias, cervix and vagina. They will check the breasts too.On a side note when you go for class 1 they will check the rectum and anus too, so be mentally prepared.These are part of the CA-34A form, to be filled by the examiner. They will provide it and all other necessary forms on spot.Step - 4: Self declaration of overall health and family history.Now this part can't be checked by the doctor and you need to precisely mention everything from the given options in the form as a tick for yes and cross for no. If found wrong, it is a punishable offense with fine and jail and a ban from flying.This is a part of CA-34 form too. You can obtain this from the forms section of DGCA website, but not necessary.Step - 5: VerificationThe examiner will verify your xeroxed documents and originals side-by-side. They will be attested by the examiner and must bear your signature too. Originals will be returned back to you as soon as the verification is done.ConclusionYour reports and xeroxed documents along with the filled CA-34 and CA-35, which is confidential, will be speed posted to DGCA within a week. The normal processing time is 4 weeks minimum in DGCA office but on average 6 months of delay can be expected.The examiner will return a copy of the CA-35 back to you. The assessment itself takes around 3 hours. The examiner will put this stamp- FIT FOR CLASS-II INITIAL MEDICAL ASSESSMENT.The rest are confidential and do take care of your health. It is okay to loose touch. It is okay even though it is not supposed to happen. It is okay that you have forgotten that the root values of Axillary nerve is C5, C6, C7, C8, T1 but ulnar nerve has root value of C8, T1. You know you will have to read again and it is perfectly alright. But if only you knew why Axillary nerve and ulnar nerve has the said specific roots, you will remember them in future without having to go through the entire thing. You should read in a way such that you understand why things are the way they are. There is always a reason. And, there is always an answer.  ~Dr.House That's what you should be doing in the final year of MBBS if you haven't applied this technique so far. If you can understand what you are reading, you will be adding that to your USMLE prep. Follow your medicine along with  Pathoma and Goljan; Pharmacology; if possible physiology ( must for Cardio and renal ) Follow your Surgery along with Anatomy  Do your entire Gynecology with focus on ovarian tumors and physiology Try to get the developmental milestones perfectly out of your peads study. Do your clinical rounds. Don't bump them. And, start your First Aid read for the systemic chapters. By the end of the year, if you can get these done, you will be on a safe side. Don't try to touch MicrobiologyBiochemistryBehavioural Sciences These are volatile and will require steady last minute prep solidly. Apart from that, try to get involved in research, case and paper presentations, volunteer work. They will add to your CV and help you during your residency. They also showed concern for your health and love for your family.Promises marriage as soon as he/she gets to state for leave that they asked you to pay for.They Requests money (wire transfers) and Amazon, iTune ,Verizon, etc gift cards, for medicine, religious practices, and leaves to come home, internet access, complete job assignments, help sick friend, get him out of trouble, or anything that sounds fishy.The military does provide all the soldier needs including food medical Care and transportation for leave. Trust me, I lived it, you are probably being scammed. I was selected for a summer internship 2016.I tried to be very open while filling the preference form: I choose many products as my favorite products and I said I'm open about the team I want to join.I even was very open in the  location and start date to get host matching interviews (I negotiated the start date in the interview until both me and my host were happy.) You could ask your recruiter to review your form (there are very cool and could help you a lot since they have a bigger experience).Do a search on the potential team.Before the interviews,  try to find smart question that you are going to ask for the potential host (do a search on the team  to find nice and deep questions to impress your host). Prepare well your resume.You are very likely not going to get algorithm/data structure questions like in the first round. It's going to be just some friendly chat if you are lucky. If your potential team is working on something like machine learning, expect that  they are going to ask you questions about machine learning, courses related to machine learning you have and relevant experience (projects, internship). Of course you have to study that before the interview. Take as long time as you need if you feel rusty. It takes some time to get ready for the host matching (it's less than the technical interview)  but it's worth it of course.
