Well this was in the 70's. I ran a summer jobs program for Native American Youth. This was in Oklahoma, way out in the country. The temperatures were hot as hell, I drove a beat-up car with no ice-conditioning. The drive to work was 45 minutes. I worked out of a small agency. There are 5 Indian tribes in that area. The jobs program was paid for by federal funds. I visited the tribes, explained the program, and interviewed applicants at the agency. After hiring around 150 youth/teenagers, each tribe provided the specific jobs. I traveled every week to pick up time-sheets, fill out payroll forms, receive the checks and then drive back out to the tribal areas and deliver the kids' checks.I enjoyed the job very much. I was left alone to design, organize, implement, and run the program.I learned all about Native Americans. I learned the culture, I learned the problems facing them, the lack of jobs, education, housing, business. The severe alcohol problems. Basically I discovered how forgotten this population is in the USA.I'm sure the elders of each tribe and the youth thought I was clueless (which I was). But I became accepted, and even attended many meals with the tribes. I loved Native American cooking, fry bread etc. I loved the artwork. I learned and appreciated so much from their generosity.But.......I hated the damn heat! The merciless sun beating down on the bare plains as I drove miles and miles and miles all over central Oklahoma. I will never forget that horrible dry heat and horrible hot winds that summer. Ugh!
