Add a static IP (also free, just make sure its attached to a running server) to link external domains and you can start playing around with AWS in less then 30 minutes. All of this free for a year. Through bitnami you can run some prepared open source apps for AWS. This should provide a nice starting point for working with AWS.(also, about price: if you expect fluctuations in server requirement AWS might be the best option. If expecting consistant server usage you might want to look at VPNs, about the course... probably not worth the money, but I don't know. I just know that trying out the product worked exceptionally for me. There is free info everywhere.)
