Financial aid was completely different (and relatively unnecessary) when I attended MIT in the early 1970’s.Now, in the USA, one is required to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA): FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid (US citizens and permanent residents only).and many private colleges also require a form with a lot more detail, like the PROFILE: Apply for College Financial AidThe FAFSA is Free (first F in FAFSA), and the colleges adjudicate the FAFSA and handle the process, but the form is filed through the Federal Government, online. The student gets a PIN and the parents get a separate PIN (online application).Forms like the PROFILE cost money and that is how the College Board makes more money than just from the SAT exams…..I am uncertain if the people who bring you the ACT exam, have their act together and a different (for fee) financial aid form…..Everyone who fills out the FAFSA correctly is offered aid. Most of it is in the form of a Federal Direct Loan. So be careful, because a (total cost) $65,000 per year private college may offer:Merit scholarship (the elite private colleges do Not offer merit scholarships).Grant money from the college’s money for aidFederal Direct LoanWork study (which is No guarantee of an on-campus job and therefore I consider a “come on” which is illegal advertising…….Federal Pell Grant (truly poor US families can get upwards of $6,000 per year from the US government)Some students may be offered an Athletic Scholarship by the college subjected to NCAA rules.The Money goes to the College and not to the student. If the student is living off campus and not using the college dining service and the Federal money is More than the college tuition and fees, then you get into some interesting games that the college will use to give you that extra money to use for private room and board.Be careful. A loan and work-study are not really aid. You have to pay back the loan and you have to work some unspecified job which may not exist to get work-study money.All the best.

Since the advent of all these student loan woes that affect the current workforce, I have advised to consider non-traditional routes to a career path. Having large loans is just not smart but also provides you with a poor return on investment for your education.There are various you ways to save, here are some of my ideas:Community college - Do you really need to get that degree from a more expensive university? I have met students from both regular 4 year colleges and 2 year community colleges and it is what the students do with what they learned that drives their success, not the type of school they came from.Scholarships - Meet with the Financial Aid office in the school that you are going to. Ask for all types of scholarships. There are some that are less known but any amount you can get helps. Some are private, independent foundations, such as the Kaplan Education Foundation and the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, which provide scholarships of up to $30,000 to talented community college students who wish to transfer to selective four-year universities. Don’t call. Go and meet them personally.Work - Your income is your greatest tool in not only paying for your education but also for improving your quality of life in the future, as long as you save and invest it properly. This may mean stopping for a while but it is only temporary.Go Fund Me - I’ve heard a lot of students that have gone this route and have succeeded in getting some funding. One of my patients with cerebral palsy just went off to college with a Go Fund Me “scholarship”.Study Abroad - If you are adventurous enough, how about getting that degree from a school in another country. Just make sure that they are accredited and that your credits will transfer to your country of origin. I am a graduate of one, my tuition fee for my last semester of Occupational Therapy school in the Philippines was $300. (This was in 1992).Live with your parents - This saves a lot of money for cost of living expenses. They may not get you the tuition fees and the like but at least they can offer their home for you to live in until you finish. That is a lot of help.Ask for it - Don’t borrow, Ask for anything that any family member or friends can GIVE. That way, nobody owes anything to anyone. Use the funds properly.Look for companies - Some sponsor and some reimburse you to study. Look for them.Military service - I had a therapy technician that went the Marine route and got them to pay for his Nursing school. Now he is a nurse in a big hospital in his hometown and loving every minute of it. He loved it so much, that he found another nurse as a partner.Focus - You are in college to improve your quality of life. Get rid of distractions and finish it as fast as you can. This helps you use the least amount of money.God bless you in your endeavors!!!

I'm a hacker who served 4.5 months of a 9 month sentence 5 years ago. I was in two jails in that time, spending the majority of the time in the second, lower security place. The experience totally changed me, but in a positive way.First of all, I actually had a lot of fun in jail. My education made certain aspects of the prison system very easy for me to navigate, such as legal documentation and debating with guards. My ability to mend broken electronics very quickly became known. These things made me feel very safe, since people were actively protecting me. It also made me feel quite important in the community.It started when someone came to me and asked what I knew about mending mobile phones. In UK jails, many people have mobiles, usually obtained by over-the-fence smuggling. Pay-as-you-go credit vouchers are a major form of currency. This guy was very important on the wing - he had a crew of other guys who walked around with him and people often came to pay him. I said I knew enough about phones, and what did he want? He explained that someone had owed him money but couldn't pay. He'd taken the guy's phone as payment, but the phone was pin-locked and he couldn't get in. The phone was an old Samsung, one which I knew (having previously owned one) didn't impose any limit on the number of pin attempts. So I told the guy: yeah, I know a few tricks. But I need to get my tools out so I'll do it overnight. (Note: I didn't have any tools). The guy left me with the phone overnight, and I sat up through the night to try all 10,000 possible 4-digit combinations. Thankfully, the correct code turned up in the mid 2000s. So the next day this guy turned up and was amazed that I had figured out the code. He went round telling everyone that I was some tech wizard and that people should always come to me with their problems. In return for the job he arranged for me to have a Playstation 2 in my cell for two weeks, and to get access to a phone whenever I wanted. For the rest of my time, people would bring me trivially broken electronics and I would retire for the evening to make it out like I was doing something difficult, then return the fixed item the next day. It massively increased my quality of life in there.Secondly, it opened my eyes to how people less fortunate than me live their lives, and how terrible the prison system is for most people. Many, many people in jail were severely mentally ill. There was no support for them. Some were killed in jail, either by inmates or staff, because they flipped out and people got scared. Another large group of people were hopelessly addicted to very harmful drugs. People who exploited this group were the most powerful - they would have drugs smuggled in, then build an army of addicts who would do their bidding to get the next fix. It was a really explosive situation. Almost every act of violence was drug debt related. Immigrants were completely screwed in jail, because there was no way for them to navigate the bureaucracy. I helped several people avoid deportation, including one cell-mate who had a hit contract out on him in Jamaica because he defended his business when yardies tried to extort him. He couldn't read or write, so he couldn't fill out the asylum application. His patois was so strong that his lawyer couldn't really understand what he said, and the border agency was going to send him back to Jamaica to be killed. I wrote letters to the border agency, the prison governor and the home secretary and he was granted asylum and an interpreter was arranged so that his legal visits would be more productive. Hundreds of others in similar situations go without that help every year.Thirdly, I saw some horrible things. For example: 'syruping' - when someone mixes sugar into a bucket of boiling water and dumps it on someone's face. The dissolved sugar makes the boiling water cling to the skin longer, and the skin peels off leaving the raw flesh exposed. I also saw someone held down by four guys, who performed anal surgery on him with a sharpened spoon to extract drugs he was hiding. He later maimed all four of his assailants, stabbing them in the neck with a pen (saw that too). Another was a guy who was clearly paranoid schizophrenic. His cell was opposite mine. He started screaming one night and barricaded himself in. He then stripped off and covered himself with baby oil, and started setting fire to his cell. The guards came in riot gear to tackle him, but he was so slippery it was like trying to catch an eel. He gave them the run around for quite a while before they eventually held him down and injected him* and he was carried away screaming. He died in hospital.Fourthly, I felt so ashamed of myself that I changed my life forever. I was a middle class white kid with a great education who got obsessed with hacking and document security as a teenager and went down for figuring out how to replicate the driving license, thus throwing away many of the advantages that luck, society and my parents had given me. Everyone else in there had no such advantages. Most of them were born to a life where poverty, drugs, violence and lack of education all being concentrated in their environment led to them being systematically channeled into prison. I was there essentially through misplaced intellectual curiosity, while others were there because their lives were so bad out of jail that crime was actually a rational survival choice. Society failed them, while it tried to hold me up with both hands. I was, and am, disgusted with myself. Upon leaving jail I learned programming, worked freelance to pay for my tuition while I got a degree, got a PhD position, and am now working towards spending my life using my skills as efficiently as I can to improve the lives of as many people as possible. If I ever have a lazy moment, I just have to cast my mind back to prison, and the disgust with myself rises up again, and I launch myself back into work with an energy I never knew I had before prison.Finally, I would say that my criminal record has not held me back. I no longer have to legally disclose it**, but when I did I always did so with a letter explaining some of the circumstances and how deeply it had affected my life. I had several positive comments about my disclosure, and I have never been turned down for a job I've applied for. It doesn't have to hold you back - your attitude has to convince a potential employer that your background makes you a great candidate, not a worse one.*This has been corrected: In my haste to write the post I previously wrote that a dart was used, when in fact it was a needle. Thanks to Marty Bee for pointing out that this was not likely.**For those who are curious, a conviction becomes 'spent' in the UK after a certain time. The times were recently reduced in a little publicised law (Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012), so my conviction was 'spent' after 48 months.

Yes it has been one of the best things that I have done because it helped me to keep myself unaffected from the distractions which the fantasy world of social media can pose on a teenage mind.Taking up Political Science during graduation instead of going for engineering after completing 12th from Science stream has also been one of the most daring and best decisions of my life. I feel that you should study what you wish to and if you succeed in studying that subject interestingly then a bright future awaits you!Getting detached from people I was once highly attached to is also one of the best things I have done. I firmly believe in the philosophy of Gautama Buddha in which he says, ‘root of suffering is attachment’. It’s not easy to detach from people you’ve had close ties with but sometimes its necessary in order to restore your sanity and peace of mind.I have inculcated the habit of digital note making and it is one of the best study techniques I have adopted. It’s efficient, consumes very less time, is easy to edit and can be accessed from various devices from any part of the world. Due to its easy accessibility, it gets quite easier to revise those notes.Drove an Uber cab and it’s also one of the best things I have done because it helped me save my own life! Driving a cab on your own is better than traveling in a car driven by a sleepy driver and getting involved in an accident!Another best thing is that I have never cheated in an examination. I have firmly believed that a student should never indulge into cheating practices. Collapsing a nation doesn’t require atom bombs. It only requires allowing the students to cheat in the examination. The so-called ‘scholars’ who would emerge out from that system of education will be sufficient to collapse a nation. The collapse of education is the collapse of the nation.I have been successful in keeping myself away from drugs, cigarettes and alcohol. These things may provide momentary pleasure but they have serious side effects in the longer run.Lastly, I have been assisting a student in his studies free of cost. He is a student of Class 12th and he is a newspaper hawker by profession. I help him in English and somewhat in Mathematics. My other friends also help him in other subjects. I also help him to buy stationary items as far as I can because I am also a student and I receive limited pocket money. But I believe that I have enough (knowledge and money) that I can easily help an another deserving person with his studies and hence I do so. He is a very innocent, intelligent and hardworking child. He lost his father at a very young age and his mother works as a daily wage laborer. His board exams are approaching and I hope that he will do very well.

Twice I had to wait for IRS verification when my son was requesting financial aid from Villanova in 2012 and 2013).
