Is somewhat hard since UT Austin auto admits top 7% of students at their high school and Texas has a lot of high schools. However, is still much easier to get in out of state compared to an instate student who wasn’t in the top 7% of their class.

I am from West Friendship, MD (small town between Baltimore and Washington DC), and I currently go to UT Austin. I love it.I went to a small private school in Baltimore, where most of the people in my grade went to prestigious liberal arts colleges. While I chose to double major at a huge public university. It was very strange for me to come here at first because it was very different from what I had previously experienced. But that is one of the reasons for why I chose UT. It was a new, exciting experience for me to have at an amazing university. Plus the linguistics and computer science programs are incredible and highly-ranked. Coming here has opened more doors than I thought possible. I have had the chance to intern at Google twice, something I do not know I could have achieved without UT.Moreover, people are fascinated by you when they first meet you, especially at orientation and the first few days of freshman year. I liken it to a unicorn, where you are instantly interesting because you are not from Texas. I notice the differences sometimes, but it is almost never an issue. I did not know what Buccee's was. I had never had migas or breakfast tacos. And my accent is a little different. But it does not matter to them because they are my best friends.I love going to UT. UT Austin is a pretty good place to get your Ph.D. if you're interested in these topics. There are a number of top professors in these areas at UT. While most of them are in the CS department, a number of outstanding ones are in places like ECE, the McCombs Business School, the School of Information, the Statistics & Data Science department, and in mathematics and linguistics. This answer assumes you're looking at the CS department.ProfessorsThe #1 concern for any Ph.D. student is finding an advisor who has compatible research interests and working styles. Like other programs, UT Austin will fly admittees to Austin for a weekend to meet professors and current graduate students – it's important to attend this weekend or make alternate arrangements to visit. While professors are usually very happy to talk to admits, they will generally not have time to talk to prospective students before they are admitted.  The top UT professors in these areas are, in no particular order: Pradeep Ravikumar (graphical models, optimization), Inderjit Dhillon (linear algebra, ML, big data, some bio), Raymond Mooney (natural language processing), Peter Stone (reinforcement learning, robotics), Kristen Grauman (vision), Risto Miikkulainen (evolutionary computing, neural networks), and Dana Ballard (embodied cognition, cognitive science). There's also TACC, a supercomputing center with some very powerful machines that you can use. The department is highly collaborative, and there is almost no sense of competition for placement, money, or resources. Most advisors choose to have their students sit among students in other labs, but similar areas, to encourage collaboration. Instead of qualifying exams, there is a "research preparation exam" that students generally complete in their third year and involves giving a ~45 min research talk to a 3 person committee of professors (one of whom must be from outside your area). This is not a stressful requirement.FundingAll PhD students in the CS department have traditionally been funded for the duration of the program.  Stipends provided by the department are comparable to other places (about $1700-$1900/month). Most of the professors listed above regularly have research grants that cover almost all of their students, but it is typical for students to TA for a year or two. Students are often awarded other internal and external fellowships to support their studies.AustinThe city is one of the biggest draws to the program. You’ll first need a bachelors degree that fulfills the requirements of the master’s, so electrical engineering / CS / computer engineering, or a handful of other tech / engineering / programmer fields. I went as an undergraduate from 2006–2010. Though I was in state, I went to a high school without class ranking but had high enough grades to get in. After knowing thousands of peers who also got in, here are my thoughts:As a texas high schooler be in the top of your class with a good set of extracirriculars. By law the top percentage gets automatic admission. Lower achieving students may get denied or redirected to a UT branch in a different city.As an out of state high schooler, be in the top 25%, have a career goal you can articulate in your application, and apply to a specific school, such as business or nursing. There are less spots for out of state students, candidates will only stand out by demonstrating their hunger to specifically learn at UT.As an in state student without sufficient high school grades, transfer your 2nd or 3rd year. A popular approach for students from cities like Dallas or Houston is to enroll in Austin Community College for their basic credits, living in west campus with their UT friends in private apartments. Once their lower division credits have been earned, they make great transfer candidates and usually get in.

Thanks for the A2AThe patent does help your case to get an admit into the top 50, but UTAustin is right up there at the top.And I am gonna give the oft heard response that GRE is not the sufficient condition to get into a college, but it still is necessary, and if I were you I would take a shot at UTAustin with a score of more than 320, with more than 165 in quants (assuming you’re asking about CS, since those have the maximum cutoffs generally).
