I thank your husband for serving in the Navy, and you for supporting him. It is an honor few people can claim, and as you can see its not for the faint of heart. What you are describing was also my experience, but I generally worked 16 hours a day, 7 days a week for a year at a time while deployed to Iraq (did this twice), and about 12 hours a day, 5 days a week when in garrison. Your husband has more obligations than I did though, he has a family. Divorce rates in the military are incredibly high at around 80%. People also marry young, hoping to anchor their perpetual instability with someone who can be their rock at home. I wish I had a rock at home that cared as you do, but it was impossible to meet someone with my schedule.  Your marriage and your husband's work-life balance are more important than serving in the Navy. There is someone willing to take his place when he decides it is time to move on. However, his schedule won't always be so hectic. Your husband's work schedule is dictated by the operational tempo of his current unit. Some units work their servicemen to death. I was an officer, and in my experience the worst environments to work in were when the senior ranking had poor home lives or when senior ranking were chasing promotions by overpromising what they could deliver on with their current staffing. My first commander and his wife were hanging on by a thread. Thus, his junior officers and our soldiers were routinely forced to stay at work well past dinner time on a regular basis. He didn't want to go home so he poured his energy into his work, then demanded we did the same. There was nothing I could do, unless I had a friend or family member that both outranked my commander and could influence his career if he continued to abuse those under his command.  Service members can't quit. They can't sue for poor work-life balance. They can express their concerns during command climate surveys.  Your husband has two choices: (1) hope that the next duty assignment will be better, or (2) get out.  You have one choice, but it is a powerful one when used right. The family readiness group, or FRG, is usually headed by the wife of the senior ranking officer or NCO. Some caution is needed as these women often (and sadly) assume the rank of their husband, and in some units they can be a pain to deal with. In my unit, the FRG was awesome. This is where real change happened because the wives stuck together and forced their husbands into certain actions in the interest of family life and work-life balance. What you need to do is start networking with the other wives and either (a) go to an FRG meeting, or (b) signNow out to whoever is in charge of the FRG and let them know of your complaints. If you have networked with other spouses you can form some strength in numbers and present legitimate complaints that will be taken seriously. For your husband's sake, you need to present the issues from your perceived viewpoint regarding your husband's schedule objectively. Put some thought into how you want to be perceived when you bring these issues up, as you can do so professionally with potentially positive outcomes. Good luck in all, and I wish you two the best.
