I'm not completely in agreement with the statement that half of the peer reviewed articles from 2007-'12 are now open access. Can you provide the link from where you got that data? However, open access has many business models: OA journal business models. A look at that link would make it evident how diverse the mode of functioning of OA is and how they have been able to keep the idea afloat. The publishing firms that had reaped extraordinary profits through subscription charges are moving towards OA as institutions/organisations are increasingly moving towards OA. There has been many attempts by publishing companies to avoid financial losses they accrue by foregoing subscription charges. Most of the publishing firms from "toll access" journals have come up with "article processing charges" (APC) in this regard. APC is the fees that authors have to pay the journal publisher once the article is accepted for publication. It is also the policy followed in some OA journals. But take a look at the following to understand how much the journal publishers that have dominated the academic publishing industry charge for making articles OA: Open access articles (Elsevier - $500 - $5000)Page on tandf.co.uk (Taylor and Francis - $2,950)Page on sagepub.com (Sage Open - $195)There has been a greater number of OA journals in the recent years and most of them don't charge APC. A Study of Open Access Journals Using Article Processing Charges shows that the average APC charged by OA journals (about 26% of the total number of journals listed in Directory of Open Access Journals) was $ 906 (varying from $8 to $3900).The larger number of open access means there are more articles in these journals, implying lesser number of articles in "toll access". It can mean that the publishing firms that have traditionally dominated the field of academic publishing are getting affected. But there is no conclusive proof for this and the APC charged by these firms do not say this at all.

Last time i checked there is no charge to apply for any research position at IITGN.Regarding two different research area, i suggest to choose only one and prepare best in your strength subjects.One foot cannot stand on two boats.
