[Music] thanks for inviting me to join this virtual celebration of the 50th anniversary of the national highway traffic safety administration nitsa's mission to save lives prevent injuries and reduce the costs associated with traffic crashes is critical to all americans thanks in no small part to your work the fatality rate on our nation's roads has declined by 75 percent over the past 50 years overall there are more than 16 000 fewer fatalities on our roads today than in 1970. that's true even though there are so many more americans driving many more miles today that is a tremendous accomplishment that's why this 50th anniversary celebration is focused on key safety advances that nitsa has championed throughout the years they include seat belts about 90 percent of drivers and passengers now wear their seat belts they're one of the best tools to protect passengers in case of a crash impaired driving campaigns which have done so much to alert drivers to the dangers of driving under the
