Hello my name is Mary Martha Churchman I'm with the Federal Transit Administration Office of Program Management, and today I'm going to be giving a high-level overview Of FTA's statutory authority and the grant programs that we administer that provide assistance to state and local governments and a few other entities to provide public transportation service at the local level. First I'm going to talk a little bit about the legislative authority for our programs. Federal assistance for public transportation was initiated by president John F. Kennedy in 1962 was the original proposal, and he proposed at that time that he thought that for the foreseeable future an investment of ten to twenty five million dollars a year would be needed to maintain public transit in America. And his vision came to reality in the UMTA act of 1964 - It was the Urban Mass Transportation Act that was passed in the year 1964.
