[Music] do hi everyone i'm sam luca the 2020 interpretive naturalist intern at the adorama interpretive center this 2020 summer season in this installment of the newcomb naturalist notes we will be looking at the history of logging in the rich lake area easily visible from the trails at the aic are two different artifacts from the 1800s a boom chain and the remnants of a splashdown these relics are from an era when timber was floated on the hudson river and its tributaries to sawmills down river in what is known as a log drive or river drive timber was cut in the summer peeled of its bark and then hauled onto the frozen lake in winter when the snow and ice melted and the spring water levels were high enough the river drive commenced splash dams were constructed to raise the water levels on lakes streams and ponds in order to maximize the number of logs that could be floated downstream benson lossing an author and adventure seeker of the mid 19th century mentioned seeing ruins of a spla
