most of the enquiries that I get for prospective postdoctoral show no thought whatsoever the letter comes and says dear sir in the worst instance or you know dear professor Schekman I've studied your work on vesicles and I'm really interested and you know I've got my PhD from so-and-so and here's my CV I don't even answer those they show no thought whatsoever and it's rare I have to say the few that I look at are when the letter comes and there's a thoughtful page of description about you know what's going on in my lab they've obviously read it they have done some thinking about it themselves and here's an idea whether it has merit or not here's an idea about what I'd like to do those the only ones I pay attention to and those are rare so just a little bit of advice once you start looking for a postdoc you have to take some time to do homework to study the labs that you're interested in to show them that you've actually you know have some thoughts on it otherwise why are you wasting yo
